No. 5 Midwestern busts out brooms at Northeastern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 5 Midwestern State had nothing but zeroes to throw at Northeastern State as MSU rolled to 7-0 and 4-0 Lone Star Conference North Division wins Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

Kristina Gutierrez and Brittney Tanner each tossed 2-hit shutouts to extended the team's shutout string to 21 innings as the RiverHawks failed to score in the 19 innings played in the series.

Gutierrez notched her seventh shutout of the season in the opener notching 13 strikeouts and no walks while improved to a perfect 11-0 on the season.

The Mustangs opened the scoring in the first inning as Elena Bennett and Megan Chartier reached on infield singles before Kim Jerrick drew her first of a school single-game record four walks to load up the bases.

But NSU starter Kylee McKinney escaped with minimal damage when MSU managed just one run on Tanner's groundout back to the pitcher.

McKinney wasn't so fortunate in the second inning as Amanda Potysman stroked leadoff single to left field before Carey Campbell and Chartier drew walks to set up Mallory Mooney's bases loaded, bases clearning double to the left-field gap to put the Mustangs up 4-0.

MSU took advantage of a double steal of home by Bennett, an RBI-single by the red hot Chartier and plated another run on a wild pitch in the fourth inning to up the lead to 7-0.

Bennett (3-for-3) and Chartier (2-for-3) combined for five of MSU's 10 hits, while Tanner also logged a 2-for-3 outing with an RBI.

The Mustangs would use Tanner's arm in the nightcap as the senior from Burkburnett also notched her seventh shutout of the campaign while logging eight strikeouts to improve to 16-2.

MSU plated a run on an Alyson Reynolds sacrifice fly in the second, while Gutierrez drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth to push to give the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage.

Midwestern broke open the game in the sixth when Reynolds roped a double down the left-field line and Nicki Duff followed with a bunt single to set the Mustangs up with runners at the corners.

The Mustnags then employed the hang-up play with Duff drawing the throw from the plate inducing a run-down that resulted in a double-steal with Reynolds scoring from third.

Bennett's looped double down the left-field line scored Duff to give the Mustangs a four-run advantage.

Chartier, Potysman and Reynolds recorded two hits each to lead MSU's 10-hit attack.

The Mustangs, who improved to 27-2 on the season and 4-1 in LSC North Division play, open the MSU Invitational No. 2 with games against Central Missouri and St. Mary's Friday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitches are set for noon and 4 p.m., respectively.

Northeastern State fell to 9-15 and 0-3.
