MSU doubles' sweep the difference against TexAnns

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Leah Roberts and Abbie Lewis battled nearly two hours to finally subdue Tarleton State's Adriana Jaskova and Melanie Barnes at No. 2 doubles Wednesday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.

That proved to be the difference as Midwestern State improved to 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in Lone Star Conference play with a 5-4 win over the TexAnns.

"The women played well today," MSU coach Scott Linn said. "We were solid at doubles and got a great singles' performance from Lindsey Holcomb."

Roberts and Lewis' marathon win clinched a doubles' sweep for the Mustangs as Alex Odell-Michels and Rozike Van Rensberg edged Mariana Frietas and Alicia Perez 9-7 at the No. 1 position while Holcomb and Ashley Huse battered Kayla Deathrage and Silvia Nieva 8-3 at No. 3.

Holcomb delivered a quick 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles over Deathrage and Huse clinched the victory when Nieva retired due to injury after the two split sets at 4-6, 6-1.

With the match secured, Tarleton claimed a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles and claimed tiebreakers after the teams split sets at the top three singles' spots.

Midwestern State takes on Texas Tech Friday morning in Lubbock.

Tarleton State fell to 3-3 on the season.
