About the Mustangs

Midwestern State moved ahead four spots to No. 5 in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 this week.

The Mustangs are off to their best start in school history at 24-2 after taking two of three last weekend at Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Sophomore outfielder Elena Bennett's school record hitting streak of 20 games was snapped last weekend in the first game of the Southeastern Oklahoma series.

Bennett hit .574 (39-for-68) during the 20-game stretch from Feb. 5 to March 6 while scoring 24 runs and notching 16 stolen bases.

Senior pitcher Brittney Tanner factored in each of the decisions last weekend against Southeastern Oklahoma as she suffered her second loss before earning a save and a win last Saturday as the Mustangs bounced back to win the last two games of the series.

Tanner is now 14-2 with one save while posting a 1.28 ERA allowing 18 earned runs on 66 hits in 98 2/3 innings. She is second in the LSC with 141 strikeouts while walking just 12 batters.

Bennett continues to lead a trio of .400-or-better hitters for MSU with an LSC-best .506 batting average.

Sophomore outfielder Courtney Bingham hits .453 with six doubles, five triples, two homers and 32 RBIs, while freshman catcher Kim Jerrick bats .446 with four doubles, four homers and 23 RBIs.

Senior pitcher Kristina Gutierrez remains unbeaten at 10-0 while posting a 1.51 ERA. She has permitted 15 runs on 43 hits in 69 1/3 innings. She has notched 107 strikeouts and walked just nine.

This will be just the second game for Northeastern State against Lone Star Conference competition this season as the RiverHawks took a 4-1 loss to current No. 1 Angelo State last month.

The RiverHawks are led by Lisa Ripperger at the plate

The sophomore infielder is hitting .359 with four doubles and eight RBIs, while senior outfielder Jessica White leads NSU with two homers while driving in nine runs with a .328 batting average.

Northeastern State is hitting .271 as a team while scoring 4.3 runs per game.

The RiverHawks are led in the circle by sophomore Cayce Coleman, who is 5-4 with a 2.76 ERA while striking out 51 and walking 21 in 66 innings.
