Mustangs close California trip in style over Vanguard

COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Midwestern State Mustangs got back on the winning track Thursday as they picked up wins on both the men's and women's sides against Vanguard (Calif.).

The Mustangs women (8-3), ranked 50th in NCAA Division II, handed the NAIA's fifth ranked Vanguard women (5-4) a 6-3 decision.

The 29th Mustangs men improved to 9-1 with an powerful 8-1 triumph over the Lions (3-8) ranked sixth in the NAIA.

"Both teams played hard in every spot," stated MSU Coach Scott Linn. "We competed on each court. I'm very happy with our play."

The MSU women were paced by sophomore Leah Roberts and freshman Abbie Lewis. The duo paired to win at No. 2 doubles over Anna Valingsten and Brittnie Furuvald 8-2. Roberts then took down Valingsten 7-6 (5), 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Lewis handed Eskaterina Gabashvilli 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

The MSU women also got wins from Lindsey Holcomb and Ashley Huse at No. 3 doubles, beating Gabashvilli and Teresa Odera 8-4. Holcomb was a winner at No. 5 singles against Furuvald 6-2, 6-3, and Huse was victorious at No. 6 singles over Ashley Tebeau 6-1, 6-1.

On the men's side, MSU swept all matches except No. 1 singles, where VU's Lucas Periera beat Mario Urban 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

But Urban and Bo Zaputovic teamed at No. 2 doubles to beat Robin Wagner and Sandro Busher 8-2, with Zaputovic adding a win at No. 4 singles over Alexandre Piccin 6-3, 6-1.

Vjekoslav Stipanic and Luke Joyce started the MSU sweep of doubles with an 8-6 win at No. 1 against Piccin and Periera, while Jarrod Liston and Chad Meeks paired for the Mustangs to take No. 3 over Nils Iwdal and Radek Rosiak 8-5.

Stipanic downed Wagner 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2, with Joyce beating Yahor Kryvaruchka 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 and Liston taking Iwdal 6-3, 7-6 at No. 5.

The Mustangs completed the win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory by Rory de Boer at No. 6 over Garrett Gillon.

MSU is in action again Sunday at the MSU Tennis Center in a Lone Star Conference match against Abilene Christian. It's USTA Campus Kids Day for the Mustangs, with special treats for children attending. First serve is 2 p.m.
