Mustangs Men fall for first time, Women also lose

AZUSA, Calif. – The Midwestern State Mustangs suffered double losses on Wednesday as Azuza Pacific showed MSU why their programs are near the top of NAIA tennis.

The loss gave the 29th ranked Mustangs men (8-1) their first loss of the season, while the Cougars, ranked fourth in the NAIA, moved to 9-3.

The fifth ranked Cougar women (12-1) dropped the Mustangs to 7-3 on the season.

The MSU men collected all three wins from Mario Urban and Bo Zaputovic. The No. 2 doubles team easily outdistanced APU's Whitman Hough and Ilja Ikonnikov 8-1. Urban dueled Jochem Hoefnagels to a 7-5, 7-6 victory at No. 2 singles, while Zaputovic downed Hough at No. 4 singles 7-6, 7-6.

The Mustangs played close in three other spots, dropping a heartbreaker at No. 3 doubles with APU's Daniel Moore and Benedikt Eger downing Chad Meeks and Jarrod Liston 8-6 in the tiebreaker for a 9-8 win.

Liston dropped a three-set decision to Frederik Wilkens 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 5 singles and Vjekoslav Stipanic fell in three to APU's Janosch Apelt 6-1, 6-7, 6-2.

Senior Alex Odell-Michels led the MSU women against the Cougars. Odell-Michels won 7-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles over Natalie McNall. She also teamed with Rozike van Rensburg at No. 2 doubles to beat Casey Wetzig and Leah Hoffee 8-2.

MSU's Leah Roberts beat Kim Koetterheinrich 6-2, 6-3 for the other win.
