COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Midwestern State Mustangs opened their California trip in strong fashion, taking down two of the highest ranked squads in the NAIA.
The MSU men, ranked 29th in NCAA Division II, remained undefeated at 8-0 after beating fifth-ranked Concordia (Calif.) 5-4. The MSU women (7-2) followed by taking down the fourth-ranked Concordia women 5-2. Both matches were played at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
"We played inspired tennis," stated MSU Coach
Scott Linn. "We had to come back to win three singles matches."
The men went to the wire against Concordia, winning 5-4. MSU swept all three doubles matches to vault into singles play.
Coming through strong for MSU was
Mario Urban and
Bo Zaputovic. After the pair teamed to beat Bruno Santarelli and Jan Guler 9-7 at No. 2 doubles, Urban claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kareem Berdai.
Luke Joyce followed with a hard fought 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles against Santarelli 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 that sealed the match.
On the women's side it was the play of Rozike Jansen van Rensburg and
Alex Odell-Michels claiming three of the five points. The duo stopped Joran Kimura and Kristin Yep at No. 2 doubles 8-5.
Van Rensburg came back with a three-set win at No. 1 singles against Bettina Radke 6-3, 0-6, 6-1. Odell-Michels followed suit at No. 3 singles with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 triumph against Johanna Sceresini that clinched the match.
Lindsey Holcomb added a 6-3, 6-4 singles win over Yep at No. 4, and teamed with
Ashley Huse to beat Summer Beaird and Casey O'Connor at No. 3 doubles 8-4.
