DURANT, Okla. - No. 9 Midwestern State got back on track with a pair of Lone Star Conference North Division wins over Southeastern Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon at SOSU Field.
The Mustangs rolled to wins of 3-1 and 6-1 to improve to 24-2 on the season and 2-1 in LSC North Division play.
MSU rode a pair of strong pitching performances as
Kristina Gutierrez improved to 9-2 on the season allowing just one earned run on five hits in six innings of work. She notched eight strikeouts and walked none.
Senior
Brittney Tanner, who came on to earn a save for Gutierrez in the opener, was dazzling in the finale as she allowed just one run on three hits while striking out out six to move to 14-2.
Sophomore leadoff hitter
Elena Bennett got the Mustangs off to quick start in the opener as she drew a walk and advanced to second on an illegal pitch before stealing third and coming in on a wild pitch.
Bennett was in the middle of the mix in the fourth as
Amanda Potysman came around to score and put the Mustangs up 2-0 as her speed forced a throwing error.
The Mustangs pushed the lead to 3-0 on an illegal pitch in the sixth before Southeastern's Sam Vrska broke up the MSU shutout with a solo homer in the seventh.
Midwestern used the big inning in the night cap as
McKenzie Sickler delivered a two-run single in the second inning, while Tanner keyed a four-run sixth inning with a two-run double.
Cassy Tice provided SOSU's lone offense with a solo homer in the fifth inning as the Savage Storm slipped to 18-12 and 1-2.
Midwestern continues LSC North next weekend with a three-game set against Northeastern State at Mustangs Park. The teams play a single game Saturday at 3 p.m. before playing a doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.
