Midwestern set to open LSC North play against Savage Storm

Setting the Stage

No. 9 Midwestern State opens Lone Star Conference North Division play with a three-game series against Southeastern Oklahoma State this weekend at SOSU Field in Durant, Okla.
 
The Mustangs and Savage Storm play a single game Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. before closing the set with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon with first pitch set at 1 p.m.

About the Mustangs

Midwestern State is off to its best start in school history and - for the second straight year - leads NCAA Division II in wins at 22-1.
 
The Mustangs are riding a 13-game winning streak into the opening weekend of North Division play and remain near the top of the rankings in every major category.
 
Midwestern boasts the top defense in the league with a .971 fielding average and is second in both team batting average (.376) and team ERA (1.32).
 
Sophomore outfielder Elena Bennett leads the LSC with a .526 batting and has hit .574 (39-of-68) during her current school record 20-game hitting streak and is just one of three MSU hitters boasting better than a .400 batting average.
 
Sophomore Courtney Bingham ranks fourth in the LSC with a .453 batting average with six doubles, five triples and two homers while driving in a league-high 32 RBIs.
 
Kim Jerrick is enjoying a solid start to her collegiate career while batting .441 with three double, three homers and 21 RBIs.
 
The Mustangs fill the lineup with five more .300 hitters including sophomore third baseman Mallory Mooney (.357, 7 2B, 4 HR, 25 RBIs), senior designated player Alyson Reynolds (.354, 3 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 17 RBIs), sophomore second baseman Carey Campbell (.346, 2 2B, 1 HR, 9 RBIs), senior shortstop Amanda Potysman (.326, 1 2B, 3 HR, 12 RBIs) and senior first baseman McKenzie Sickler (.300, 2 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 11 RBIs).
 
Midwestern State is led in the circle by a pair of seniors in the circle.
 
LSC North Preseason Pitcher of the Year Brittney Tanner is 13-1 with a 1.16 ERA while allowing 14 earned runs on 58 hits in 84 2/3 innings. The Burkburnett product has posted 122 strikeouts to just 11 walks while limiting the opposition to a .188 batting average.
 
Kristina Gutierrez boasts a 9-0 record with a 1.55 ERA while permitting 14 earned runs on 38 hits in 63 1/3 innings. The Pearland native has posted 99 strikeouts to just nine walks while limiting the opposition to a .171 batting average.

About the Savage Storm

Southeastern Oklahoma State (17-10) is coming off a pair of shutout wins over Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday afternoon, but has split their last 10 games coming into the start of Lone Star Conference North Division play.
 
The Savage Storm, who carries a .337 team batting average, is topped by a trio of .400 hitters.
 
Junior second baseman Lindsey Lacy leads the way at .457 with four doubles, three triples and a homer while driving in 11 runs and stealing 18 bases.
 
Senior outfielder Jeana Keyes is batting .449 with 10 doubles, a triple and 13 RBIs, while junior third baseman Sam Vrska hits .427 with six doubles, a triple, three homers and 18 RBIs.
 
Junior Audra Rhudy and senior Ashley Smith seem to have stepped to the forefront of SOSU's four person staff.
 
Rhudy leads the way with a 5-3 record while posting a 2.45 ERA. She has allowed 45 hits - 20 for extra bases - while notching 44 strikeouts and five walks in 51 1/3 innings of work.
 
Smith has posted a 4-4 mark with a 2.56 ERA while allowing 20 earned runs on 60 hits in 54 2/3 innings while notching 46 strikeouts and 11 walks.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Southeastern Oklahoma State will meet for the 35th, 36th and 37th time on the diamond Friday and Saturday at SOSU Field.
 
The Mustangs own a 19-15 edge in the all-time series and have claimed wins in the last three games and five of the last six dating back to the 2009 season including an 8-0 run-rule win in five inning earlier this season in Kingsville.
 
MSU has fared well at SOSU Field where the Mustangs own a 9-5 edge in seven trips to the Savage Storm's home venue.
