Game Day: Mustangs set for sixth NCAA II postseason appearance

Setting the Stage

Here we go again, right?

For the eighth time in the last two years, Midwestern State and Tarleton State lace 'em up for another showdown in what is quickly becoming one of the best rivalries in all of NCAA Division II.

It will be just the fifth time in school history that MSU faced a team eight times in two seasons with the last time coming in the 1953-54 and 1954-55 seasons against Gulf Coast Conference foes North Texas and Trinity.

Midwestern has faced the same team four times in a season on eight other occasions including a sweep of the Texans last season. On the flip side, the Mustangs have never been beaten by the same team four times in the same season.

The first round matchup is set Saturday at noon for Hamilton Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.

The winner faces the victor of the Missouri Southern/Washburn first round game in the semifinal round Sunday at 5 p.m.

About the Mustangs

Midwestern State is making its sixth overall and third straight NCAA Division II postseason appearance beginning with Saturday's game against Tarleton State.

The Mustangs have won each of the four first round games by claiming wins over Northeastern State in 2000 and West Texas A&M in 2007 before eliminating Incarnate Word in the opening round in both 2009 and 2010.

Senior guard Chris Hagan, who garnered Daktronics All-South Central Region honors earlier this week, continues to lead the Mustangs, the Lone Star Conference and the South Central Region in scoring at 21.8 points per game.

The Houston native poured in a game-high 26 points in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Championships then tallied 19 of his team-high 21 points in the first half against Tarleton State in the LSC semifinals.

Hagan has now scored 1,114 points which are the third most points for a two-year player in Midwestern men's basketball history trailing only former All Americans Tony Forch (1,391) and Henry Crawford (1,320).

The two 20-point efforts were his 17th and 18th this season.

Midwestern State continues to lead the LSC and ranks 10th in NCAA Division II with a .499 team field goal percentage. The Mustangs have shot 50 percent or better in six of their last nine games.

About the Texans

Tarleton State had its 11-game winning streak snapped by Central Oklahoma in the Lone Star Conference Championship game Sunday afternoon at Bruin Fieldhouse in Bartlesville.

The Texans, who are now 1-6 in LSC titles games, are making their eighth NCAA Division II postseason appearance in the last 10 years while advancing to the Elite Eight in 2005 and 2006.

Senior guard Corin Henry was placed on the Daktronics All-South Central Region first team after averaging 14.3 points and 4.2 assists per game. The LSC South's Defensive Player of the Year has paced the Texans in scoring in each of their last eight games.

The balanced Texans boasts five players averaging better than five points a game including junior forward Wes Dipprey (7.3 points, 5.9 rebounds), senior guard Devon Hills (7.2 points, 3.7 rebounds), junior forward Fabian Wilson (6.9 points, 2.9 rebounds), senior forward Donta Smith (5.6 points, 4.3 rebounds) and junior guard Darrion Washington (5.0 points, 1.4 rebounds).

Tarleton State leads NCAA Division II in scoring defense at 52.1 points per game.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Tarleton State meet for the 60th time on the hardwood Saturday afternoon at Broncho Fieldhouse in Edmond, Okla.

Despite dropping the three games this season, the Mustangs own a commanding 39-20 edge in the series that dates back to the 1961-62 season.

Tarleton State claimed each of the two regular season meeting this season by margins of 68-56 on Feb. 5 at Wisdom Gym and 49-47 on Feb. 21 at D.L. Ligon coliseum before rolling to a 74-50 victory in last weekend's LSC Championship semifinals in Bartlesville.

Prior to this season, MSU had claimed eight of the last 10 meetings between the programs including all four matchups in 2009-10.

The Mustangs bested the Texans in the only other NCAA Division II postseason meeting between the teams by rolling to a 71-56 win at the South Central Region semifinals on March 14, 2010 in Wichita Falls.

Midwestern is now 3-1 against Tarleton state on neutral surfaces claiming wins at Fort Worth in 1964, Dallas in 1967 and in the 2010 LSC Championship before Tarleton State broke the streak in the LSC semifinal round last weekend in Bartlesville.
