PORTALES, N.M. - Chris Hagan splashed in a game-high 33 points to carry Midwestern State to an 81-79 win over Eastern New Mexico in Lone Star Conference South Division play Wednesday night at Greyhound Arena.
"It was definitely a great win," MSU coach
Grant McCasland said. "We talked a lot in the locker room about making the extra play and being patient. We didn't see a lot of that tonight, but when we did that it was special and you have to say
Chris Hagan and
David Terrell had great basketball games."
Terrell, a junior forward from Houston, turned in his fourth double-double of the season and achieved the feat for the second time against ENMU as he finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The LSC's field goal percentage leader connected on 9-of-14 shots including a pair of dunks in just 22 minutes of play.
While Terrell lit up the inside, Hagan spearheaded the perimeter game by knocking down five treys as the Mustangs would finish with 10 3's as a team including a pair from
Michael Loyd and one each from
Keonte' Logan,
Kevin Loyd and
Adrian Van Buren.
The Mustangs needed every point to overcome a persistent Eastern New Mexico charge led by freshman forward Max Carrier, who delivered an all-around performance of 24 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.
The 'Hounds took control midway through the first half as Carrier fueled a 13-2 run with five points as ENMU raced to a 26-19 lead on a Victor Reid jumper with 7:55 remaining in the opening half.
But the Mustangs would hold Eastern without a field goal over the final 5:47 of the opening half as Van Buren and
Kevin Loyd buried 3-pointers as part of a 15-3 MSU to close out the opening half. Hagan knocked two free throws with no time on the clock to give Midwestern a 38-36 halftime advantage.
Eastern New Mexico regained a slim one-point lead on Tralyn Harden's 3-pointer to open the second half, but it was just one of only two times Midwestern would trail in the second half and took the lead for good on a Terrell lay-in with 13:07 to play at 50-48.
Hagan finished 10-of-17 from the field and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe and added four assist for his highest scoring outing since notching a school record 50 points against Cameron on Dec. 13.
Michael Loyd tallied seven points and dished out four assists off of the bench.
Midwestern (17-5, 5-3), who moved into sole possession of third place in the LSC South, plays host to Incarnate Word Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game which begins at 5.
Eastern New Mexico slipped to 9-11 and 4-4.
