WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs men and women rolled as they opened at home with wins over East Central in Lone Star Conference action Thursday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.

The 29th ranked men downed the 27th ranked Tigers 8-1 by sweeping all three doubles matches and all but one singles.

"Our level of tennis was extremely good," said MSU coach Scott Linn. "I really liked the way we we're playing doubles."

Vjekoslav Stipanic and Luke Joyce teamed at number one doubles to down Andres Nunez and Stefan Stein 8-4, while Bo Zaputovic and Mario Urban also won 8-4 over ECU's Carlos Muro and Julian Caminos. Jarrod Liston and Chad Meeks took an 8-3 win against Andrew Cabato and Ignacio Lucero.

On the singles side, the Tigers claimed the number one match with Nunez downing Stipanic 6-2, 6-4.

MSU answered with Joyce ripping Muro 6-2, 6-0 at number three and Urban claiming a three-set win over Stein 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 at number two.

"Joyce played well today," Linn added. "He was strong and finished well."

Zaputovic beat Caminos 6-1, 7-5 at number four, with Liston taking Chad Morgan 6-3, 6-3 and Octavian Dinuta beating Cabato 6-1, 6-3 to round out the scoring.

MSU is now 4-0, while ECU fell to 0-3.

Sophomore Leah Roberts made a strong comeback during her match at number two singles to lead on the women's side.

Roberts was trailing 5-1 in the second set after losing the first set 6-4. She rallied to take the next six games in the set, then won the tie breaker 10-5.

"I'm very proud of the way Leah made the decision to play today," said MSU coach Scott Linn. "She refused to let the match get away from her and helped the entire team learn how to finish and win."

Freshman Rozike Janzen van Rensburg was strong as well. Winning her number one singles competition over ECU's Marta Valles 6-2, 6-1 after teaming with Alex Odell-Michels to down Kristen Clubb and Rhiannon Mecanovic 8-1 at number two singles.

"Rizzo played her best match of the year," Linn added. "And it was great to have Alex back in the lineup."

Odell-Michels missed the first three matches with an injury. She won her number three singles match against Nilsa Ramierez 6-1, 6-0.

"They've done a really good job of learning how to win. They've really embraced toughness."

Abbie Lewis downed Kenrda Coltrain 6-1, 6-1 at number three and teamed with Roberts to beat Valles and Ramierez at number one doubles 8-6.

Lindsey Holcomb beat Clubb 6-0, 6-0 in singles, while Ashley Huse defeated Adisha Waghmarae 6-3, 6-1. Holcomb and Huse combined to beat Coltrain and Waghmarae 8-0 in doubles play.

The Mustangs women improved to 3-1, while the Tigers fell to 0-3.

The MSU men are in action again Saturday at 2 p.m. against Cowley County. The women play again on Wednesday, March 2, against Tarleton State at 3 p.m. Both matches are at the MSU Tennis Center.
