WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State fought No. 19 Tarleton tooth and nail Monday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

But the heart, hustle and determination wasn't enough to overcome distinct disadvantage at the charity as MSU finally succumbed to 29 fouls and the TexAnns 67-59 to fall out of the running for next week's Lone Star Conference Championships in Bartlesville.

The Mustangs dropped to 9-15 overall and to 5-7 in the South Division, while TexAnns rolled to 22-2 and 12-0.

The Mustangs maintained a lead deep into the second half as MSU battled with determination particularly depicted in junior Karissa Lang.

The walk-on guard from Fort Bragg, Calif. poored in a career-high 13 points including a pair of 3-pointers and scrapped for four rebounds and four assists in 31 minutes of court time.

But the star for the Mustangs in the first half was clearly Cierra Thompson. The junior forward scored 10 of her 12 points as MSU would lead by as many as six points when Nolisha Markham knocked down a jumper with 1:51 before intermission to give MSU a 30-24 lead.

Midwestern would lead until as late as 9:31 to play in the game before Tarleton erupted for a 9-0 run keyed by a pair of layups in transition and a 25-foot bomb by Sonya Sundberg to give the TexAnns a 53-46 led with 7:05 to go.

The Mustangs were able to cut the margin within four on a couple of occasions, but couldn't pull any closer .

Tarleton State held a commanding 39-22 edge in free attempts as MSU was whistled for 29 fouls to the TexAnns 17.

It was the 12th-straight win for Tarleton over the Mustangs.

Midwestern closes the season by playing host to Angelo State Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum at 6 p.m. before facing Abilene Christian on the road on Saturday.
