Game Day: Mustangs, Texas moved back to 7:40 p.m.

Setting the Stage

The No. 18 Midwestern State Mustangs put their 4-0 overall record and 3-0 Lone Star Conference mark on the line against the 1-4 Tarleton State Texans.

The game is currently under weather delay due to lightning. Kickoff has been tentatively moved back to 7:40 p.m. Stay tuned for updates.

Where to Find the Game

  • 100.9 BOB FM - The broadcast features the play-by-play voice of two-time Lone Star Conference Broadcaster of the Year Bill Powers. He is joined by KAUZ TV-6 anchorman Chris Horgen, who serves as color analyst.
  • On the Web - BOB-FM's audio broadcast is simulcasted on BOBradio.fm. Link
  • Television - The game is tape delayed on Time Warner Cable's WFTV-15 and the Texas Channel.  Dan Hawkins has the play-by-play, with Chris Koetter providing the color analysis. WFTV-15, Channel 15 on TWC in Wichita Falls, will replay the game on Sunday at 7 p.m. and Tuesday at 8 p.m.  The Texas Channel (digital 888 in Wichita Falls) will first replay the contest on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.  The Texas Channel is also available on channel 185 in Dallas, channel 24 in El Paso and channel 888 in San Antonio, Austin, Waco, Temple, Killeen, Corpus Christi, Rio Grande Valley and Laredo.

For the Record

The Mustangs are 4-0, 3-0 in the Lone Star Conference after beating Incarnate Word 45-14 last Saturday in San Antonio.  The Mustangs are ranked 18th this week in the AFCA Division II Football Poll.

Tarleton State sports a 1-4 season record, 1-2 in Lone Star Conference play after dropping a 44-13 decision to No. 20 West Texas A&M in Stephenville last Saturday night.

Who's Hot

Midwestern State scored on five of it's first seven possessions on the way to a 45-14 thumping of Incarnate Word.

MSU continued it powerful ground game as the "New Pony Express" rolled up 290 yards against the Cardinals, marking the third consecutive game the Mustangs collected 290 or more rushing yards.

Junior quarterback Brandon Kelsey was on fire against the Cards and is definitely on the trend up.  Kelsey was the leading rusher in the game with 113 yards including a 24-yard touchdown run.  He threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns, hitting 12-of-14 passes with one interception.  His 268.1 pass efficiency rating for the UIW game is a new MSU record.  For the season Kelsey has hit 54-of-77 passes for 780 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions and is ranked second in NCAA Division II with a 170.55 pass efficiency rating.  He's also third on the team and fifth in the LSC in rushing, averaging 70.5 yards a contest.

Senior Lester Bush picked up 103 rushing yards against UIW with a five-yard scoring run.  He's second on the team and third in the LSC with an average of 75.8 yards a game on the ground.

Sophomore Keidrick Jackson was the D2Football.com National Offensive Player of the Week and the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his 160 yards on 18 carries (8.9 per carry) with three touchdowns to go with his team-leading four receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown against Texas A&M-Kingsville.  He then saw limited playing time against Incarnate Word, carrying the ball only twice for 17 yards.  He's second in the Lone Star Conference and is 55th nationally in rushing with 80.3 yards a game, and leads the LSC and is third nationally in scoring averaging 13.5 points a contest. 

Redshirt freshman Jimmy Pipkin was ill last week and did not play against UIW.  He led all rushers at the Lone Star Football Festival with 106 yards and broke an 87-yard touchdown run in the waneing seconds of the contest for MSU against Texas A&M-Commerce.  He's ninth in the LSC with a 48.3 yard average.

Senior David Little had a great game against UIW, with seven receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns.  He has 20 catches for 328 yards on the season (16.4 yards per reception).  He's moved into second in career receptions and yardage with 131 grabs for 1,804 yards.  He is third in touchdown receptions with 17.

has hauled in 20 of Kelsey's passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns.  Little continues his climb up the career receiving charts, now ranking second in receptions with 124.  Little is also fourth with 1,668 career receiving yards and fourth in career touchdown receptions with15.

Senior linebacker Ty Duncan, the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week after the Missouri S&T game, continues to lead the tackle chart with 29 stops.

Sophomore Neiko Conway has two pass interceptions to lead the team this season, with a total of five in his 13 career games at MSU.

The MSU defense allows 342.3 total yards a game, but is second in the LSC and 22nd nationally in scoring defense at 17.3 points given up a contest.

Tarleton State is keyed offensively by senior Nick Stephens at quarterback.  After changing to a primarily pass oriented offense, Stephens has thrown for 1,389 yards, completing 120-of-214 passes with eight touchdowns and four interceptions.

Tarleton is averaging 26.8 points and 383.8 total yards a contest.

Defensively, the Texans are giving up 440.0 yards and 35.8 points a game.

Sophomore linebacker Marquis Wadley leads the Texan tackle chart with 57 stops in five games (11.4 per game).

Sophomore Dashaun Phillips, a starter at cornerback, has four interceptions in five contests this season.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Tarleton State are meeting for the 26th time, including contests when both were junior colleges, when they clash at Memorial Stadium.  The Texans hold a 17-7-1 series advantage.  MSU snapped a seven-game losing streak to Tarleton last season at Wichita Falls Memorial Stadium with a 31-26 win on Oct. 30, 2010. 

Quick Hits

  • This is the third straight week the Mustangs will make an appearance on Time Warner Cable's Texas Channel.  MSU has had a long-standing relationship with Time Warner Cable in Wichita Falls.
  • The Mustangs moved up in the AFCA Top 25 this week at No. 18.  MSU was 22nd last week.  The D2Football.com media poll has the Mustangs at No. 22.
  • Midwestern State has scored on all 22 of it's appearances in the red zone this season, scoring 20 touchdowns and two field goals.
