#13 Mustangs lay down hammer, deck #9 ACU 70-28

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 13 Midwestern State rolled up a school-record 740 yards in a 70-28 demolition of No. 9 Abilene Christian before a Homecoming crowd of 9,821 Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

The Mustangs improved their best start in school history to 7-0 while moving to 6-0 in Lone Star Conference play. MSU moves on to face Eastern New Mexico next Saturday in Portales.

The yards were the most ever surrendered by Abilene Christian, which fell to 5-2 and 4-1.

The Wildcats drew first blood keyed by a 49-yard connection from Mitchell Gale to Darrell Cantu-Harkless before Gale connected with Taylor Gabriel for the first of three TD passes to give ACU an early 7-0 lead.

It was all Midwestern State from that point on.

MSU quarterback Brandon Kelsey, who passed for 205 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 114 yards on 10 carries, connected with Edgard Theliar for the first of their three touchdown connections to kickstart the Mustangs.

Keidrick Jackson gave the Mustangs the lead for good with a 1-yard run with with 3:30 to go in the opening quarter.

The Mustangs surged for three more scores in the second quarter to lead 35-7 at halftime.

The teams amassed an MSU combined yardage record with 1,287 yards with Abilene Christian posting 547 total offense yards.

Redshirt-freshman Jake Glover hit Vernon Johnson with a 99-yard slant with 2:45 to play to tie an NCAA national record to close out scoring.

Jackson paced the Mustangs' 436-yard rushing attack with a game-high 129 yards with three touchdowns, while Jimmy Pipkin rushed for 94 yards on seven carries and Lester Bush ran 10 times for 58 yards.

Gale totaled 413 yards on 32-of-55 passing with three touchdowns - all to Gabriel, who caught 10 passes for 138 yards.
