Setting the Stage

The No. 12 Midwestern State Mustangs put their 6-0 overall record and 5-0 Lone Star Conference mark on the line against the 5-1 and No. 9 Abilene Christian Wildcats.

The Mustangs are 6-0, 5-0 in the Lone Star Conference after beating Angelo State 68-20 last Saturday in San Angelo.  The Mustangs are ranked 12th this week in the AFCA Division II Football Poll.

Abilene Christian sports a 5-1 season record, 4-0 in Lone Star Conference play after beating No. 17 West Texas A&M in Abilene 28-18 last Saturday afternoon.  The Wildcats are ranked ninth in the AFCA Division II Poll this week.

Who's Hot

Midwestern State scored on its first six possessions on the way to a 68-20 thumping of Angelo State.

MSU continued it powerful ground game as the "New Pony Express" rolled up 393 yards against the Rams, marking the fourth consecutive game the Mustangs collected 290 or more rushing yards.  They actually had more than 290 rushing at the half.

Junior quarterback Brandon Kelsey directed the offense in the first half before turning over the reins.  He rolled up 371 yards of offense, rushing for 134 yards on six carries including a 77-yard run and completing 12-of-16 passes for 237 yards with four touchdowns.  He set a single-game record with his 281.9 pass efficiency rating.  For the season Kelsey has hit
80-of-112 passes for 1159 yards with 11 touchdowns and four interceptions and is ranked second in NCAA Division II with a 183.62 pass efficiency rating.  He's also second on the team and fourth in the LSC in rushing, averaging 78.7 yards a contest.

Redshirt freshman Jimmy Pipkin carried the ball five times for 141 yards with touchdowns of 14 and 71 yards to post consecutive 100-yards games, marking a first for MSU since 2007. He also had 155 yards against Tarleton State and was named Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week. He led all rushers at the Lone Star Football Festival with 106 yards and broke an 87-yard touchdown run in the waneing seconds of the contest for MSU against Texas A&M-Commerce.  He's second in the LSC and 41st in Division II with an 88.2 yard average.

Sophomore Keidrick Jackson was the D2Football.com National Offensive Player of the Week and the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his 160 yards on 18 carries (8.9 per carry) with three touchdowns to go with his team-leading four receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown against Texas A&M-Kingsville.  He's sixth in the Lone Star Conference and is 98th nationally in rushing with 65.2 yards a game, and leads the LSC and is 10th nationally in scoring averaging 11.0 points a contest. 

Senior Lester Bush picked up 103 rushing yards against UIW with a five-yard scoring run.  He's fourth on the team and seventh in the LSC with an average of 61.2 yards a game on the ground.

Senior David Little 31 catches for 486 yards on the season (15.7 yards per reception).  He's moved into second in career receptions, yardage and touchdowns with 142 grabs for 1,962 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Senior linebacker Ty Duncan, the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week after the Missouri S&T game, continues to lead the tackle chart with 48 stops.

Sophomore Neiko Conway has three pass interceptions to lead the team this season, with a total of six in his 15 career games at MSU to tie for seventh on the all-time list.

The MSU defense leads the LSC by allowing only 313.0 total yards a game (34th nationally), and leads the LSC and is 13th nationally in scoring defense at 17.0 points given up a contest.

Tarleton State is keyed offensively by senior Nick Stephens at quarterback.  After changing to a primarily pass oriented offense, Stephens has thrown for 1,389 yards, completing 120-of-214 passes with eight touchdowns and four interceptions.

ACU is averaging 31.7 points and 452.2 total yards a contest.

Defensively, the Wildcats are leading the LSC and rank fourth nationally in rushing defense allowing just 74.3 yards a game.  Overally, ACU gives up 394.0 yards and 20.7 points a game.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Abilene Christian are meeting for the 26th time, the longest series featuring only senior college games in MSU history.  MSU has a 5-19-1 series record. 

Quick Hits

  • The Mustangs are on a 14-game regular season winning streak.  The Mustangs last regular season loss was to ACU 42-41 on Nov. 10, 2007.  Since that time MSU has lost only one other game, an NCAA playoff affair to ACU 24-21 on Nov. 14, 2009.
  • The Mustangs moved up in the AFCA Top 25 this week at No. 12.  MSU was 15th last week.  The D2Football.com media poll has the Mustangs at No. 13.
  • Midwestern State has scored on all 29 of it's appearances in the red zone this season, scoring 26 touchdowns and three field goals.
