DENTON, Texas - Midwestern State battled to force a fifth set then couldn't convert three match points before falling to Texas Woman's University 25-23, 25-27, 25-20, 23-25, 23-21 Saturday afternoon at Kitty Magee Arena.
The Mustangs tasted defeat in a match they controlled at least one match point for the fourth time this season to fall to 12-9 on the season and to 4-8 in Lone Star Conference play.
The teams traded set wins over the first four frames in a match that featured 43 ties and 24 lead changes before slugging it out in the decisive fifth set.
Midwestern fought off the first match point opportunity courtesy of a kill from senior middle blocker
Miranda Byrd to knot the match at 14-14 in the fifth set.
Byrd paced a pack of four Mustangs in double-figure kills with 17 while committing a single attack error in 33 attempts good for season high .485 kill rate.
The Mustangs earned their first match point when Byrd combined with freshman
Katie Bertling for a block to put MSU up 15-14. TWU answered the call with a Katelyn Barnett kill before Byrd put another ball down to give Midwestern a second shot at match point.
But TWU's Viktorija Jablonska, who finished with a match-high 23 kills, had the an answer for the Pioneers.
The Mustangs scratched for one more match point following back-to-back kill by sophomore
Caitlin Wallace before Texas Woman's finally closed out the match.
Wallace added 13 kills and four blocks while Bertling and junior
Shelbi Stewart had 10 kills each for the Mustangs who hit .199 as a team.

Kiara Jordan led back row efforts with 25 digs and was joined in double figures by
Hillary White with 18 while
Brandi Flores and
Kristan Aduddell notched 14 each.
Midwestern State, which fell to 0-5 on the road, takes on Eastern New Mexico Tuesday night in Portales. First serve is set for 8 p.m.
Texas Woman's improved to 10-12 and 8-5.
