SAN ANGELO, Texas - No. 15 Midwestern State rolled up over 700 yards of total offense in a 68-20 thrashing of Angelo State in a Lone Star Conference contest Saturday night at San Angelo Stadium.
The Mustangs, who improved to 6-0 for the first time since 1949, prepare for a Homecoming matchup with rival Abilene Christian Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
But MSU certainly didn't overlook the Rams as the game - and most of the Mustangs' starters - were safely tucked away in the wake of a 533-yard first-half explosion as Midwestern led 52-7.
Starting quarterback
Brandon Kelsey needed just 30 minutes to set new career marks with 374 yards of total offense including a 12-of-16 passing night for 237 yards and four touchdowns. The junior from Arlington also ate up 134 rushing yards including a 77-yard touchdown jaunt to close the half.
The Mustangs were hot out of the gate as Kelsey hit
Edgard Theliar on a post route for a 22-yard touchdown pass five minutes into the contest to start the deluge.
Redshirt-freshman running back
Jimmy Pipkin came off of the bench to gash the Rams for scoring runs of 14 and 71 yards to push the advantage to 21-0 with 5:16 to play in the opening quarter.
Pipkin picked up his third 100-yard rushing game of the season running for 141 yards on just five carries with two touchdowns. The 71-yard burst was his third run of 70-or-more yards this season.
The Kelsey-to-
Sheldon Galloway connection worked for the next to scores to up the advantage to five touchdowns three minutes into the second quarter before
Greg Saladino hit a 43-yard field goal for a 38-0 lead.
Angelo State answered back for its lone touchdown of the first half when Tristan Carter rolled off left tackle for a 24-yard score with 3:16 to go in the opening half.
There was still time for Kelsey to account for two more touchdown as he hit a wide open
David Little behind the ASU defense for a 63-yard strike at the 2:27 mark then closed the half with a 77-yard scoring run.
The Mustangs relied solely on reserves in the second half which was highlighted by
Jake Glover's 51-yard strike to
Thomas Carper in the third quarter while reserve quarterback
Joe Sanders rushed for an 11-yard TD to close out scoring in the fourth quarter.
Angelo State, who had limited West Texas A&M to 242 yards of total offense last week, dipped to 3-4 overall and to 0-4 in league play.
