WICHITA FALLS, Texas - It may not have been a masterpiece, but the final result was a thing of beauty for No. 21 Midwestern State Monday night.
The Mustangs committed 17 second-half turnovers but that didn't stop them from constructing a 25-point advantage on the way to an 89-69 non-conference win over Newman (Kan.).
"It wasn't pretty, but you look up at the scoreboard to see a 20-point win," MSU coach
Grant McCasland said.
It was the 11th-straight victory for MSU which improved to 11-1 on the season while claiming the 36th consecutive home victory and 500th overall under the dome.
Newman appeared to bother the Mustangs with its matchup zones but that only allowed MSU to demonstrate its inside presence as
Thomas Colbert,
David Terrell and
Darrick Thomas combined for 21 first-half points as the Mustangs led by as many as 18 before the intermission.
And the Mustangs buried six shots from beyond the arc on the way to a 51-38 lead at the break.
Midwestern picked up the pace in the second half which led to more errors, but also wore down the out-manned Jets as the Mustangs pulled away for 83-58 lead on a
Keonte' Logan's transition layup with 5:39 remaining then cruised the rest of the way.
Junior guard
Michael Loyd led the way with all-around 18-point, seven-assists, five-rebound performance while senior guard
Chris Hagan was held under 20 points for the first time in six games but finished with 17 points, seven assists and three steals.
Colbert needed 19 minutes to finish with a double-double at 10 points and 10 rebounds while Thomas added 10 points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes.
Chip Stevens paced Newman with 13 points while Eric Saunders and William Burdette added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Senior guard Keaton Schultz, who came in leading the Jets with a 15 points per game average, was held without a field goal in 10 attempts from the floor.
Newman dipped to 7-5.
