Game Day: Midwestern gunning to take down No. 9 UIW on road

Setting the Stage

Midwestern State goes for a first in Saturday night's Lone Star Conference South Division contest against No. 9 Incarnate Word at McDermott Center.
 
The Mustangs is winless in 13 tries against teams ranked in the Top 10 of the NABC Coaches' Poll all time on the road.
 
The meeting with the Cardinals also marks the first conference contest between the schools as Midwestern has ended each of the last two Incarnate Word season upending UIW in the NCAA II South Central Regional first in Warrensburg, Mo. in 2009 then at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season.
 
The teams are currently locked in a three-way tie with Angelo State for second place in the LSC South Division at 2-1.

About the Mustangs

The clearest indicator of success for Midwestern State during the 2010-11 season has been crystal clear.
 
The Mustangs have out-rebounded the opposition in 12 of 17 games this season and have won and are undefeated in those contests. Conversely, MSU is 2-3 when it doesn't control the battle on the glass.
 
Midwestern is coming off of its most dominant rebounding performances of the season in Wednesday night's 89-69 win over Eastern New Mexico at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
 
The Mustangs controlled a 47-20 edge on the glass and ranked second in the LSC with a +7.1 rebounding margin.
 
Junior forward David Terrellneeded just 16 minutes of court time to deliver his third double-double of the season Wednesday finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds against ENMU.
 
It was just one of several breakout performances for the MSU front court as Darrick Thomas added 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, Thomas Colbert added 10 points and five rebounds in 15 minutes and Charlie Logan pitched in six points and 10 rebounds in 18 minutes.
 
Senior guard Chris Hagan, the LSC's leading scorer, poured in 15 of his game-high 22 points in the first half and knocked three treys in just 24 minutes of action while junior guard Michael Loyd added 10 points, four assists and three steals in 21 minutes off of the bench.

About the Cardinals

No. 9 Incarnate Word will try to keep its perfect home record intact Saturday night at McDermott Center.
 
The Cardinals are 9-0 at home this season which includes victories of nationally ranked Central Oklahoma and West Texas A&M.
 
Incarnate Word opened the season with 11 consecutive before taking a 94-74 loss on Jan. 6 at Texas A&M-Commerce.
 
The Cardinals rebounded to claim wins in their first two divisional contests before falling 69-66 Wednesday night at Tarleton State.
 
UIW features a tight rotation of seven players who average between 17.1 and 35.3 minutes a game.
 
Senior Tracy Robinson leads the way with 18.1 points per game while pulling in 7.5 rebounds. The 6-8 forward shoots 51.7 percent (106-of-205) from the field.
 
The Cardinals balanced attack includes junior forward Chris Johnson (11.3 points, 6.8 rebounds), senior guard Eric Stewart (10.9 points, 4.1 rebounds), sophomore guard Kelcey Solomon (10.7 points, 4.1 rebounds), junior guard Shaun Umeh (10.6 points, 3.8 rebounds), junior forward Jordan Roddy (8.1 points, 2.1 rebounds) and senior guard Deleon Hines (8.0 points, 2.5 rebounds).
 
Incarnate Word averages 76.9 points per game and allows 67.1.

About the Series

Midwestern State and Incarnate Word meet for the 19th time on the hardwood Saturday night at McDermott Center.
 
The Cardinals own a slim 10-8 edge in the series that dates back to the 1991-92 season, but the Mustangs have won the last four meetings including South Central Region victories in each of the last two seasons.
 
The last five regular season contests between the programs have gone to overtime with MSU claiming wins in three of the games including a 75-73 victory on Nov. 21, 2006 in their last trip into the McDermott Center where UIW holds a 4-3 all time edge.
 
The Cardinals last victory came by a 63-60 margin in overtime on Dec. 16, 2002 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
 
No. 9 Incarnate Word represents MSU's second nationally ranked opponent this season as the Mustangs fell 68-61 on Jan. 8 at No. 18 Central Oklahoma, but have posted a 5-5 mark in their last 10 games against ranked opponents.
 
The Mustangs are 0-13 all-time against Top 10 opponents on the road and are 3-25 overall against ranked opposition away from D.L. Ligon Coliseum but have won three of the last six.
 
MSU's last victory over a Top 10 squad came by a count of 60-59 over No. 7 Central Missouri in last season's South Central Regional final on March 16, 2010 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
