WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Hillari Adam's free throws with 1.9 seconds remaining lifted Abilene Christian to an 80-77 Lone Star Conference South Division win over Midwestern State Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The loss extended the Mustangs' losing skid to five games and spoiled a valiant comeback effort.
MSU's
Nolisha Markham continued her torrid stretch by pouring in a game-high 21 points and snagging eight rebounds while
Savannah Carver battled her way to 21 points in 31 minutes off of the bench.
The Mustangs trailed by as many as 14 points when ACU's Mack Lankford buried a jumper from the left baseline with 7:58 to play to give the Wildcats a 69-55 advantage.
But MSU used a 10-1 run in the closing minutes to pull even at 77-77 on
Savannah Carver's fade away jumper in the lane with 18 seconds to play.
Lankford, who paced the Wildcats with 19 points, misfired on a 3-pointer on the next possession. Adam fought off two Mustangs for the carom and emerged from the scrum with the ball and was fouled on the way up by MSU's
Katiya Jackson.
Adam hit both shots and Emily Miller connected one of two from the line with 0.8 seconds remaining as the Mustangs were unable to get a clean look at the basket before the final buzzer.
Autumn Whitaker added 17 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Wildcats while Jackson finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Mustangs.
Midwestern (4-10, 0-2) takes on Eastern New Mexico Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
Abilene Christian improved to 4-10 and 1-1.
