Mustangs use late run to halt skid, beat ENMU 74-62

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State used a late surge to roll past Eastern New Mexico 74-62 to put an end to a five-game skid and claim its first Lone Star Conference South Division victory of the season Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs posted a 14-4 run after Eastern New Mexico's Kiara Tate hit a layup to stake the Zias to a 52-50 lead with 8:57 remaining.

Senior forward Nolisha Markham, who finished with a game-high 21 points and six rebounds, spurred the rally with eight points as she hit layup before converting a three-point-play to help MSU post a 64-56 lead with 3:06 to play.

The Mustangs would ice the win wby going 8-for-8 from the free throw line over the final 1:26 of the contest to pull away for their biggest lead of the game on Jazman Patterson's two charity tosses with 41 seconds to play give the Mustangs the final margin of victory.

Junior forward Cierra Thompson gave the Mustangs a lift with 12 first half points and finished with 19 points and five rebounds while senior guard Katiya Jackson continued her stellar play with 12 points, seven assists and three steals in 34 minutes.

Patterson turned in a workman performance with nine points and four rebounds in 17 minutes off of the bench, while freshman guard Kirsti Degelia finished with six points, five rebounds and five assists.

Precious Herren paced the Eastern New Mexico attack with 14 points.

MSU (5-10, 1-2) takes on Incarnate Word Saturday afternoon at McDermott Center in San Antonio. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.

The Zias fell to 3-12 and 1-2.
