Rapid fire goals lift Midwestern past Mavs, 2-1

EDMOND, Okla. - The timing just had to be right for Midwestern State Sunday afternoon in the Broncho Invitational at Tom Thompson Field.

The Mustangs finally busted Nebraska-Omaha's offside trap as Kelsey Hill and Lindsay Pritchard pounded in rapid fire goals - both in the 62nd minute - to secure a 2-1 result.

"We were getting a lot of good opportunities going to goal and getting chances," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "We just had to time our run."

Pritchard, a junior forward, played a hand in both tallies as she cut the ball on the end line and fed a perfect cross to Hill, who ripped her first goal of the season into the back of the net to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

Pritchard stayed on the attack with a goal so quickly after Hill's tally that it was registered just five seconds later on the stat sheet.

"She crushed a shot from 6 or 7 yards out on a breakaway off of the wing that went off of a defender and in the goal," Trimble said.

It was the Whitehouse native's second goal of the weekend as she also scored in MSU's 3-2 win over No. 24 Truman Friday afternoon.

"Lindsay is our emotional heart and soul," Trimble said. "She's a hard, hard working girl and it is paying off for her. I'm really happy with Linds."

Nebraska-Omaha pulled to within a goal in the 64th minute when Hilary Horvatic emerged from a clash and looped a shot toward the frame.

"The ball bounced around on the goal line and the (assistant referee) said it went in," Trimble said.

MSU sophomore keeper Mallory Whitworth was ruled to have pulled the ball over the goal line to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Mustangs.

"We argued it and lost a little momentum at that point, but we were able to regain composure," Trimble said.

Midwestern controlled the run of play while outshooting the Mavs by a 17-5 margin.

The Mustangs return to Tom Thompson Field to play in a pair of matches in the Dr. Pepper Classic next weekend. MSU takes on Oklahoma City Friday at 2 p.m. before playing St. Edward's Sunday at noon.
