EDMOND, Okla. - No. 20 Midwestern State found itself in a familiar position Friday afternoon in the Dr. Pepper Classic hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma.
Once again, the Mustangs were behind early in the match against another tough opponent at Tom Thompson Field.
And, once again, MSU found away to scratch out a positive result by taking a 3-1 decision over NAIA No. 18 Oklahoma City.
"We came out flat and they outworked us," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "But I'm proud of the girls for finding a way to win against a very good team without playing at the highest level."
The Mustangs improved to 3-0, but we'll have their hands full Sunday afternoon against No. 10 St. Edward's as the Hilltoppers improved to 3-0 with a 3-1 win over Central Oklahoma later Friday afternoon.
Oklahoma City, which had scored 13 goals in its opening two games, came out firing as the Stars took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute on Meghan McMahon fifth goal of the season.
But Midwestern would strike twice before the closer of the opening half.
Junior striker
Kelsey Hill took a through ball from
Lindsay Pritchard and deposited her second goal of the season past Stars' goalkeeper Brittany Tibbs in the 30th minute for the equalizer.
Freshman
Mickey Brown took advantage of a misplay by Tibbs in the 42nd minute to notch her second collegiate goal and give the Mustangs a 2-1 advantage at the half.
MSU failed to capitalize on a pair of breakaway opportunities and missed a penalty kick in the second half.
"We had some chances and kept them in the game," Trimble said. "And we got beat up pretty good."
Pritchard finally put the game away with her third tally of the season on an assist from Hill in the 84th minute.
Oklahoma City fell to 2-1.
