Effort goals make all the difference in 3-2 win over Bulldogs

EDMOND, Okla. - Midwestern State had all the answers in a season opening 3-2 win over No. 24 Truman State (Mo.) Thursday afternoon in the UCO Broncho Invitational at Tom Thompson Field.

The Mustangs erased two first-half deficits before senior midfielder Brandy O'Neal banged in the game winner in the 52nd minute off of a Maddie Fraser rebound.

"That was the difference in the game," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "To be down twice in the game and to keep attacking and getting chances was really nice to nice."

Truman State went on the attack early as Kelsey Twellman fed a through ball to Olivia Hayes, who served a volley over MSU starting keeper Kallie Essary in the 4th minute to give the Bulldogs the early lead.

Essary, a true freshman from Frisco, made her first collegiate start in place of injured 2009 All-Lone Star Conference keeper Mallory Whitworth.

"Kallie is a very skilled keeper who was just a little nervous form the start," Trimble said. "But she came back and played very well."

The Mustangs notched the equalizer in the 20th minute when Lindsay Pritchard buried a cross from Brittany Martinez past Truman keeper Jayne Grisham and into the upper right portion of the net to knot the match at 1-all.

Truman re-established the lead on another Twellman cross in the 39th minute as Beth Bystrom did the honors for a 2-1 Bulldogs' advantage.

The lead was short-lived as freshman forward Mickey Brown pressured a Truman defender into a critical error.

"The ball was played through and Mickey just stole the ball from the defender," Trimble said. "The ball hit post and went. It was a great effort goal."

Brown's first collegiate goal sent the game to intermission knotted at 2-2.

The Mustangs finally took the lead in the 52nd minute when sophomore Maddie Fraser crushed a shot that Grisham was unable to handle and squired to an opportunistic O'Neal.

"The keeper had trouble with the shot and Brandy was just there to scoop it," Trimble said.

Midwestern dominated possession throughout the run of play as the Mustangs outshot Truman by a 17-6 margin and produced seven corner kick opportunities to just two for the Bulldogs.

"Truman played a good soccer game and they are a well-coached team," Trimble said. "It was a good start of the year. I'm really happy with the girls."

MSU concludes the Broncho Invitational Sunday against Nebraska-Omaha. Kickoff is set for noon at Tom Thompson Field.
