ABILENE, Texas - Mickey Brown collected her own shot off of the crossbar, reloaded and pounded the ball into the empty net to give No. 25 Midwestern State a 2-1 decision over Abilene Christian in its Lone Star Conference opener Sunday afternoon at the Wildcat Soccer Pitch.
And sophomore goalkeeper
Mallory Whitworth made four crucial saves to all the Mustangs to win their third consecutive match and improve to 6-1 on the season, but had to wait 48 hours to claim their first league win after the game was postponed due to lightning Friday afternoon.
"Abilene Christian is a very good soccer team and they were dangerous," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "Mallory came up really big. She made some critical saves that allowed us to keep the game at 1-1."
The Wildcats struck first by capitalizing on an MSU turnover in the midfield as Andrea Carpenter converted a cross from Julie Coppedge to give ACU the early 1-0 edge.
"It happened really quickly and we were unable to react," Trimble said. "Carpenter is a really good player and just headed the ball across her body."
The Mustangs would tally the equalizer in the 20th minute when junior forward
Kelsey Hill slipped in front of ACU keeper Arielle Moncure to head the ball to an open spot in the box, chased it down and chipped in her team leading fifth goal of the season.
"It was a lot of hustle on Kelsey's part and just smart soccer," Trimble said. "That was huge being down 1-0 at that point."
The match remained tied into the second half with Whitworth making a key one-on-one save denying Coppedge in the 71st minute before Brown gave the Mustangs their first lead of the afternoon a minute later.
Brown headed a
Jordan Smith crossing pass off of the crossbar before recollecting the ball and tapping it in for her third goal of the season and the winning margin.
Midwestern State continues LSC play next Friday against Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla. before returning to the MSU Soccer Sunday to take on East Central (Okla.).
Abilene Christian fell to 5-2 and 0-1.
