TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Midwestern State showed mastery of the two things it needed while overcoming the trials and tribulations of playing a bruising team on its home field Friday afternoon at RiverHawks Pitch.
Sophomore forward
Maddie Fraser had in each of the Mustangs' tallies while taking a 3-1 Lone Star Conference result to improve to 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference.
"It was really physical and it's just hard to play at Northeastern," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "It's a smaller field and they are a physical soccer team. It took us a while to get going."
After a scoreless opening half, Fraser, who notched her first collegiate multiple-goal match with two goals and an assist, put the Mustangs in front by heading in her first goal of the season off of a corner kick as senior
Jordan Smith placed a perfect ball to the far post in the 56th minute.
The Fraser-Smith combo worked again just seven minutes later as Smith chipped a ball into the box and Fraser found room to beat NSU keeper Deb Hill as Midwestern took a commanding 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute.
"We've been working on corners and scoring on crosses this week in practice," Trimble said. "Maddie was very opportunistic and put away her chances, but we were happy to be able to score off of the restart."
Northeastern State's Katie Valdez pulled the RiverHawks back to within a goal when she blasted in a free kick from 25 yards out in the 66th minute.
Fraser add an assist on a deflection off of a free kick on another restart allowing junior forward
Lindsay Pritchard to put away the contest with her fifth tally of the season in the 79th minute.
The win was the fourth straight for the Mustangs, who begin a five-match home stand Sunday with noon matchup with East Central (Okla.).
Northeastern State slipped to 4-2-2 overall and 0-1-1 in LSC play.
