WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's one-two punch of
Lindsay Pritchard and
Kelsey Hill each delivered goals in the opening five minutes to lift the Mustangs to a 2-0 decision over Newman (Kan.) Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
"I was very happy with the way the girls prepared for the game," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "They challenged themselves to get out to a quick start and came through."
Pritchard pounded in her fourth goal of the campaign by smoking a
Maddie Fraser cross past Newman keeper Christina Farid from 12 yards out on the left wing to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute.
Less than two minutes later, Hill collected a loose ball in the MSU offensive third, deftly dribbled through the heart of the Newman defense and beat Farid one-on-one for her fourth tally of the campaign.
"When (Pritchard and Hill) get their opportunities, they just good finishers," Trimble said. "I believe they will continue to do good things."
The junior striker combo has combined for nearly 3/4 of MSU's scoring output to help the Mustangs to a 5-1 start, but the back line continued to quietly go about its business Sunday against the Jets.
The Mustangs limited Newman to eight shot with just two falling on goal while delivering a second consecutive shutout behind starters
Brittany Martinez,
Hanna Staley, Alyssa Dillman and
Megan Barnhart who helped keeper
Mallory Whitworth to her fourth career shutout.
MSU has not allowed more than nine shots or five shots on goal in any of its six matches this season.
The Mustangs open Lone Star Conference play Friday afternoon at Abilene Christian. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
