DURANT, Okla. - Midwestern State coach
Venera Flores-Stafford always says volleyball is a game of momentum.
The Mustangs appeared to be turning the corner as they claimed their fourth-straight win with a 25-17, 26-24, 25-21 win in their Lone Star Conference opener Thursday night over Southeastern Oklahoma State at Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium.
"But it's also a game of errors, so I'm glad we had the fewest tonight," Flores-Stafford said.
The Midwestern attack proved efficient as junior setter
Taryn Westerman paced the Mustangs to a .364 team hitting percentage which included just seven errors.
"It didn't feel like we hit that well," Flores-Stafford said. "Their defense did a really good job of filling the seams and keeping the ball up, but our offense looked really good."
The percentage was the highest for an MSU team since the Mustangs hit .388 at Eastern New Mexico on Oct. 25, 2008 and the errors were the fewest since the same 2008 squad committed just six against Oklahoma Panhandle State.
Senior right-side hitter
Karolina Damjanovic and sophomore outside hitter
Hillary White paced the MSU attack with 12 kills posting respective hitting percentage of .440 and 296. White completed her fourth double-double of the season with 10 digs to go along with a pair of service aces.
Sophomore outside hitter
Shelbi Stewart put down 11 errorless kills for a career-best .524 hitting night and added nine digs, while junior middle blocker
Miranda Byrd put down eight kills with a .412 hitting percentage.
Junior libero
Kiara Jordan led back row efforts with 17 digs.
Midwestern (6-4) takes on East Central (Okla.) Saturday afternoon in a conference contest at Kerr Center in Ada. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
"The best thing about this is that they are learning about each other match-by-match and that's a great thing," Flores-Stafford said.
