EDMOND, Okla. - Scoring opportunities were about as plentiful as dry patches on the pitch at Tom Thompson Field Sunday afternoon in the UCO/Dr. Pepper Invitational.
The difference was simple as No. 11 St. Edward's converted two of its chances, while the 20th-ranked Midwestern State couldn't as the Hilltoppers came away with a 2-0 victory on the rain-logged natural surface on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma.
"I felt like we played very well in the first half," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "We had a high work rate and made a lot of good decisions. St. Edward's was a very organized, hard working team with skill. We just didn't match that intensity, but I feel like we will grow from that."
The match was twice delayed by lightning totaling about an hour and a half in suspensions which occurred before kickoff and in the 62nd minute, but drizzle remained persistent through the match after heavy rains soaked the field prior to kickoff.
"The ball was actually stopping in puddles in some areas on the field," Trimble said. "It rained that hard."
The teams played to a scoreless draw in the opening half before St. Edward's Crystal Trevino converted a cross from Janae Averette to give the Hilltoppers a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute.
"The ball skipped right across the box," Trimble said. "We misplayed it and they were able to finish it."
Kelly Servage blasted the put-away goal in from 35 yards out to give St. Edward's a 2-0 lead in the 62nd minute.
"It was a brilliant shot that she just spun and launched it into the upper corner of the net, Trimble said."There wasn't much we do about it."
The Mustangs matched St. Edward's with five shots on goal with two coming from junior strikers
Lindsay Pritchard and
Kelsey Hill while the other was served in by freshman
Mickey Brown.
"Most of our good chances came in the first half," Trimble said. "After they scored that second goal they really picked up their intensity and took the wind out of our sails."
Midwestern battles Oklahoma Baptist in its home opener Tuesday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
