Against the Opposition

Mallory Mooney.
The Mustangs rolled to a 9-1 victory over the Mavericks in the second round of the NCAA Division II South Central No. 2 Sub-Regionals on Saturday.

Notebook
- With a win in the final round of the NCAA Division II South Central Sub-Regional No. 1, Midwestern State would:
- advance to the South Central Regional final for the first time in program history. The event will be played as the best of three Super Regional in Wichita Falls next weekend against the winner of the NCAA Division II Sub-Regional No. 2 being played this weekend in Emporia, Kan.
- tie the Lone Star Conference single season wins mark at 53. The Mustangs would match Angelo State (2007) and Southeastern Oklahoma State (2008, 2009) for the honors. It would be the fourth-straight season a conference has won as many games.
- would improve to 24-2 at home with its only losses coming to East Central (5-2 on March 31) and Incarnate Word (12-3 on April 1).
- Senior pitcher Katie Petersen needs six strikeouts to pass former Southeastern Oklahoma standout Christina Cearley as the Lone Star Conference's all-time leader in strikeouts. Cearly posted 869 from 2003-06. Petersen enters Sunday's competition with 864 strikeouts after fanning 15 in a save against St. Mary's and a victory over Nebraska-Omaha Saturday at Mustangs Park.
- Senior pitcher Katie Petersen claimed her 91st career win in MSU's 9-1 victory over Nebraska-Omaha Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park. She needs two more to match Lone Star Conference career leaders Brittany Willson (TWU/MSU from 2002, 04-06) and Christina Cearley (SOSU from 2003-06).
- Junior pitcher Brittney Tanner won her 10th-straigh decision when she combined to 1-hit St. Mary's Saturday morning at Mustangs Park to become just third MSU pitcher to win 20 games in a season as she improved to 20-2 on the season. During the 10-game personal winning streak, Tanner has allowed 13 earned runs on 49 hits in 73 2/3 innings which is good for a 1.24 ERA. She has notched 82 strikeouts and issued just 15 walks over the stretch while limiting the opposition to a team-best .183 opponent batting average.
- The Midwestern State pitching staff has been on fire since April 1 as it has permitted one run or less in 14 of the Mustangs 22 games. MSU is 20-2 during the stretch.
- Sophomore left fielder Nicki Duff extended her season-best hitting streak to nine games by collecting singles in MSU's wins over St. Mary's and Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday. Duff is hitting .370 (10-for-27) during the streak with a triple, four RBIs and three runs scored.
- Senior catcher Lauren Craig drove in runs in each of MSU's wins Saturday over St. Mary's and Nebraska-Omaha and has now driven home runs in 20 of her last 28 games.
