Tanner, Petersen combine to shutdown St. Mary’s, 2-1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Brittney Tanner and Katie Petersen combined on a one-hitter to lift No. 5 Midwestern State to a 2-1 win over St. Mary's in the opening round of the NCAA Division II South Central Region #1 Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Field.

Tanner allowed an unearned run on one hit in the four inning start to win her 10th-straight decision to move to 20-2. The right-hander fanned four and walked one as she worked out of trouble in the first inning.

Laura Miller reached on a two-base error and scored on Kelly Baker's RBI single to center field to give the Rattlers an early 1-0.

But that would be all St. Mary's could muster against the MSU pitching duo as Tanner closed with three hitless inning before giving way to Petersen in the fourth.

The senior retired eight of the last nine and recorded six strikeouts to notch her second save of the season.

The Mustangs jumped on St. Mary's starter Taryn Munoz for a pair of runs in the first inning as three-straight reached with one out in the frame.

Elena Bennett, who went 3-for-3, legged out a bunt single before Courtney Bingham roped a double to the left-field gap.

Lauren Craig plated Bennett with a single down the left-field line before Bingham came plateward with what turned out to be the winning run on Mallory Mooney's sacrifice fly to right field.

Munoz was saddled with the loss to fall to 22-13 as she allowed two runs on nine hits.

Midwestern State improved to 51-8 on the season, while St. Mary's dropped to 34-20.
