Game Day: Mustangs host non-conference twin bill

Midwestern State steps out of conference to take on Oklahoma Panhandle State Wednesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

First pitch for the twin bill is set for 3 p.m.

What you need to know about the Aggies

  • Oklahoma Panhandle State is located in Goodwell, Okla. which is located centrally in the Oklahoma panhandle on U.S. Highway 54 11 miles northeast of Texhoma, Texas on the state line.
  • The Aggies are tied for last in the Heartland Conference with a 2-30 overall record including an 0-11 league mark.
  • Oklahoma Panhandle State has lost 25-straight games and has only won two games this season, but each of those victories came at the MSU Invitational. The Aggies defeated Missouri Southern twice at the tournament including scoring a season-high in runs with a 10-6 decision on Feb. 21 at Mustangs Park.
  • Freshman pitcher/outfielder Kristen Curlin is Oklahoma Panhandle State's top offensive threat hitting .362 with five homers and 25 RBIs.

10 Quick Facts about the Mustangs

  • Midwestern State is off to the best start since the program was revived in 2004. The Mustangs are 36-6 to better the 2006 squad's 34-8 mark after 42 games.
  • Midwestern State's No. 3 national ranking was the highest in program history. The Mustangs ranked 6th in the final NFCA Top 25 heading into the 2006 South Central Regional held at the Sunrise Optimist Complex.
  • Midwestern State is on pace to threaten the most wins in a single season as the Mustangs have won 36 games. MSU won 44 games in consecutive years in 2006 and 2007.
  • With two wins over Oklahoma Panhandle State Wednesday, the Mustangs would post the most wins in program history at Mustangs Park. Midwestern was 16-7 last season, but carries a 15-2 mark into its double dip with OPSU. The facility opened for the final two games of the regular season in 2007.
  • Midwestern State is on pace to top its highest team batting average with a .327 average through Tuesday's doubleheader sweep of Cameron. The Mustangs hit .320 last season.
  • Senior catcher Lauren Craig extended her career-best hitting streak to 13 games by going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs Tuesday in Game against Cameron. Interestingly, nine different players have boasted 13-game hitting streaks since 2004. Five of those players are on the Mustangs' current roster as McKenzie Sickler had a 14 game hitting streak earlier this season, while Mallory Mooney and Nicki Duff had 13-gamers last season and Elena Bennett joined Craig with 13-gamer in 2010. Former MSU standout center fielder Brandi Tynes set the program standard by collecting a hit in 17 consecutive games in 2004.
  • Freshman shortstop Natalie Rodriguez matched a program single-game record with three stolen bases Wednesday afternoon against Cameron. The Brazoria native stole a base in the first inning and was the back end of a double steal with Elena Bennett in the third. Rodriguez completed a straight steal of third base in the fifth before scoring on Britney Tanner's sacrifice fly.
  • Freshman shortstop Natalie Rodriguez needs one homer to match MSU's freshman mark set by former catcher Rachael Jackson, who hit seven in 2004. Rodriguez connected on her sixth home run in Game 1 Tuesday against Cameron.
  • Junior pitcher Brittney Tanner boasts a 12-2 mark with a 1.93 ERA in the circle this season and topped the 300 career strikeout mark with 10 Ks against Cameron on Tuesday, but the Burkburnett native is showing she is much more than just a top-notch pitcher. Tanner has collected a hit in five of her last six games and has hit .412 (7-for-17) during the stretch with three doubles and six RBIs.
  • Senior pitcher Katie Petersen earned her fourth LSC North Division Pitcher of the Week award this week and is approaching a couple of major conference pitching standards. The Plano native notched 10 more Ks and now has 792 career strikeouts. Petersen needs 62 more to pass former Texas A&M-Kingsville standout Maria Gutierrez, who had 853 from 1999-02 while playing for coach Brady Tigert. Petersen also claimed her 84th career victory and needs 10 more to pass Brittany Willson (TWU/MSU, 2001-06) and Christina Cearley (2002-06). Willson and Cearley each on 93 career games.
