Petersen lift No. 3 Mustangs past Cameron in Game 1, 3-1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Katie Petersen's bloop, two-run single to left field put No. 3 Midwestern State on top in Game 1 and her solid pitching insured the team a third-straight win as MSU took a 3-1 Lone Star Conference North Division decision over Cameron at Mustangs Park.

Petersen, who was named LSC North Division Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time earlier in the day, limited the Aggies to one run on six hits while striking out 10 and walking two to win her 17th-straight decision to improve to 18-2.

The senior from Plano claimed her 84th career victory and needs just nine more wins to match the conference wins record. Petersen also moved within 32 strikeouts of passing former Texas A&M-Kingsville standout Maria Gutierrez, who logged 823 strikeouts from 1999-02, for the league's all-time strikeout lead.

Petersen got off to a strong start as she struck out the side in the first inning, but the Aggies would draw first blood in the top of the fourth inning.

Callie Schlatter reached on a bunt single before Meca Chambers' hard-struck dribbler evaded MSU shortstop Natalie Rodriguez's glove and shot all the way to the fence for a run-scoring double go give Cameron the early 1-0 lead.

The Aggies managed just three base runners the rest of the way with none advancing past second base.

The Mustangs finally got to Cameron starter Carrie Harvey in the bottom of the fourth inning after the former Burkburnett High standout hurled hitless ball over the first three innings.

Lauren Craig extended her career-best hitting streak to 12 games with an single to center field and Brittney Tanner, a former teammate of Harvey's at BHS, drilled a double down the left-field line to set Midwestern up with a pair of runners in scoring position with one out.

Harvey recovered to induce Alyson Reynolds to groundout to short before Petersen delivered the two-run blow to the left-field gap.

Megan Chartier and McKenzie Sickler loaded the bases with consecutive walks before Harvey got Nicki Duff to fly out to right to end the threat.

Rodriguez blasted her sixth homer of the season over the left-field fence in the fifth to prove Petersen with an insurance run.

Four players had a single hit each of the Mustangs, while Chambers and Schlatter had two hits each to lead the Aggies.

Midwestern improved to 35-6 on the season and 11-2 in LSC North Division play, while the Aggies dropped to 15-18 and 2-5.
