WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 3 Midwestern State peppered Cameron with 11 hits on its way to a doubleheader sweep after taking Game 2 8-2 Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
The Mustangs, who improved to 36-6 on the season and 12-2 in the LSC North, step outside of league play to take on Oklahoma Panhandle State Wednesday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitch for the twin bill is set for 3 p.m.
MSU jumped on top early as
Lauren Craig extended her career-best hitting streak to 13 games with a run-scoring single through the right side of the infield in the first inning, while
Brittney Tanner followed with an RBI-single up the middle to give Midwestern a 2-0 lead.
Tanner also proved more than game in the circle as she improved to 12-2 after allowing two runs on six hits in the complete game victory. The junior added 10 strikeouts and yielded three walks.
Cameron clawed back to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth after Cheryl Raesz clubbed her fifth homer of the season over the left-field fence.
But it wasn't enough for Aggie starter Ashton McBride, who allowed four runs - all earned - on six hits in 4 1/3 innings and struggled with her command with five walks and a hit batsman.
MSU made her pay to reclaim the lead in the fourth as the Mustangs loaded up the bases on a pair of walks and an infield single with less than two outs, but McBride was able to wiggle out of the jam only surrendering the go-ahead run on
Nicki Duff's groundout to shortstop.
McBride started the fifth inning by plunking MSU shortstop
Natalie Rodriguez before issuing a base on balls to
Lauren Craig.
Rodriguez became the fourth Midwestern play to steal three bases in a game as she swiped third before scoring on Tanner's sacrifice fly to left field to give the Mustangs a 4-2 lead.
McBride gave way to Game 1 starter Carrie Harvey for the final two outs of the fifth before the Mustangs put the game away in the sixth with the Cameron ace in circle.
Craig highlighted the four-run, five-hit inning with a two-run single to left, while
Alyson Reynolds and
Katie Petersen each served up run-scoring singles of their own.
Cameron dropped to 15-19 overall and to 2-6 in the LSC North Division.
