WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State couldn't overcome a doubles deficit Monday afternoon as Cameron snapped its six-match winning streak by claiming a 6-3 Lone Star Conference decision at the MSU Tennis Center.
The teams split the top two doubles positions as
Bo Zaputovic and
Vjekoslav Stipanic teamed to defeat Cameron's Carlos Viscarra and Diego Troiano 8-3 at No. 1, while the Aggies scored an 8-5 win at No. 2 with Thomas Peixoto and Manuel Barroetavena edged
Carlos Bataller and
Luke Joyce.
Cameron claimed the decisive No. 3 doubles with Jorge Gerosi and Jeff Sasser defeating
Chad Meeks and Daniel McMullen 9-7 to give the Aggies a 2-1 edge heading into singles play.
Midwestern State faced an uphill battle when the Aggies claimed the opening sets at the bottom four singles' spots.
Cameron's Gerosi was first off the court taking a 6-0, 6-1 win over McMullen to give the Aggies a 3-1 advantage, but Stipanic pulled the Mustangs with a 3-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Viscarra at No. 2.
It was the seventh-straight singles' victory for Stipanic, who improved to 16-4 this spring in singles' play.
The Aggies quickly put the match away as Barroetavena breezed past Joyce 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 before the big-serving Peixoto clinched the win for CU with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Bataller at No. 3.
The Nos. 1 and 6 matches went to split sets before Sasser came away with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 tiebreaking victory over
Octavian Dinuta at No. 6.
MSU's Zaputovic closed the match by defeating Troiano at No. 1 6-4, 4-6, 15-13 at No. 1.
Midwestern State is slated to face Southeastern Oklahoma Thursday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
