LAWTON, Okla. - Brittney Tanner blasted her first career homer with a two-run shot over the left-center field fence to lift No. 5 Midwestern State to a 3-2 win in Game 2 over Cameron here Saturday afternoon.
The Mustangs, who claimed their eighth-straight win to improve to 40-6 on the season and to a Lone Star Conference North Division leading 14-2, have won 18 of their last 20 games.
The junior from Burkburnett also fanned 12 batters while allowing one earned run on four hits in the complete game and now won 11 of her last 12 decisions.
Tanner has recorded 10-or-more strikeouts in each of her last three starts, but has been on fire at the plate as well where she has raised her batting average 50 points to .300 since taking over regular hitting chores at the beginning of the month.
And she needed both aspects of her game Saturday to defeat the Aggies.
Cameron worked its way out to a 2-0 lead through the third inning and had senior starter Ashton McBride allowed just one hit through the opening five innings and worked her way out of a two-out bases loaded jam in the third.
But the Mustangs did all the damage in the sixth inning as they stung three of their four hits during Game 2 together with three-straight batters with one out in the inning.
Freshman shortstop
Natalie Rodriguez reached on an infield single before
Lauren Craig an RBI double to right field before Tanner planted her first-ever homer over the left field fence to give the Mustangs a 3-2 advantage.
That was enough for Tanner (14-2) in the circle as she allowed one hit over her final four innings of work.
McBride fell to 6-10 allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk in seven innings.
Midwestern State continues LSC North Division play Tuesday afternoon against Southeastern Oklahoma State. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. at the SOSU Softball Field.
Cameron is now 15-21 on the season and 2-8 in divisional play.
