LAWTON, Okla. - Midwestern State starter
Katie Petersen was just good enough during Game 1 Saturday afternoon at Cameron Field.
The senior proved worthy of her 18th-straight winning decision as the 5th-ranked Mustangs survived Cameron 3-2 in Lone Star Conference North Division play.
The Aggies (15-20, 2-7) tagged Petersen for a pair of solo home runs as Micah Lierly and Drew Wright connected on solo blasts in the third and fifth innings.
Petersen had allowed just a single homer in 17 starts and 123 innings coming into the contest, allowed a total of two runs - on the homers - on five hits while striking out six and walking two to improve to 19-2 on the season.
The right-hander continues to track down LSC career records as she needs nine wins to pass former MSU standout Brittany Willson and Southeastern's Christina Cearley, who each recorded 93 career wins. Petersen needs two more strikeouts to top the 800 mark and needs 56 to pass Texas A&M-Kingsville great Maria Gutierrez (853 from 1999-2002) for the conference high mark.
Midwestern jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as freshman center fielder
Elena Bennett reached on a bunt single and stole second before scoring on
Natalie Rodriguez's RBI-single to left field.
The Aggies would tie the game in the third on Lierly's shot before the Mustangs came back with two more in the fourth.
Rodriguez led off with a solid double to center field and came around to score on
Lauren Craig's single to right field.
MSU pushed across the second run on
Brittney Tanner's run-scoring double to left field to give the Mustangs a 3-1 lead which was enough to withstand Wright's blast in the bottom of the fifth.
Rodriguez paced the Midwestern's six-hit attack by going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. It was her 12th multiple-hit game of the season.
Cameron's Carrie Harvey slipped to 9-10 on the season after allowing three runs on six hits in the complete game. She had four strikeouts and walked two.
