Mustangs lock down opponents at Zenner Classic

JOPLIN, Mo. - No. 21 Midwestern State's pitching three-step of Brittney Tanner, Kristina Gutierrez and Katie Petersen delivered 21-straight innings of shutout ball as the Mustangs claimed three wins at the Teri Mathis Zenner Classic Saturday at Wild Field.

Tanner, a sophomore from Burkburnett, delivered a four hitter with four strikeouts and a walk to improve to 4-1 with her first shutout of the season in a 4-0 win over Pittsburg State (Kan.).

Sophomore outfielder Nicki Duff's two-run single in the fifth afforded the Mustangs with most of their offense as Tanner also paced an eight-hit attack with a pair of singles.

Junior Kristina Gutierrez scattered seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts to deliver her first MSU shutout and improved to 4-0 as the Mustangs rolled to a 7-0 win over Missouri Southern.

The Mustangs trounced the Lions for 14 hits while scoring a run in the first, four in the second and two more in the seventh as freshman center fielder Elena Bennett and senior designated player Alyson Reynolds each had three hits.

Senior Katie Petersen then delivered her second-straight and fourth shutout of the season in dominating fashion with 9-strikeout four hitter in a 2-0 win over Emporia State.

Sophomore third baseman delivered the decisive blow witha two-run double in the sixth inning as the Mustangs won their sixth-straight game to improve to 14-3.

Midwestern State closes the classic with games against Nebraska-Omaha and Northwest Missouri on Sunday.
