WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 21 Midwestern State rocked Abilene Christian for 28 hits in a doubleheader sweep Thursday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
Senior pitcher
Katie Petersen delivered her third shutout of the season to lead the Mustangs to a 6-0 lead in Game 1.
The Plano native had six strikeouts and two walks and allowed only a single through the left side with two in the first inning to improve to 5-2 on the season.
The Mustangs struck for three runs in the first inning keyed by
Alyson Reynolds' two-run single up the middle to take the early lead.
MSU put the game away with three more runs in the sixth inning highlighted by
Courtney Bingham's two-run single through the left side.
Bingham, a redshirt freshman from Arlington, paced the Mustangs by going 4-for-4 with 3 RBIs, while
Natalie Rodriguez and
Elena Bennett had two hits each.
Bingham stayed hot in Game No. 2 as she drilled a double to the right-field gap to plate Bennett to give MSU the early lead in the first inning.
Abilene Christian struck back to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the second, but it wouldn't last long.
The Mustangs erupted for six runs in the bottom of the frame keyed by
Brittney Tanner's two-run single up the middle before sophomore third baseman
Mallory Mooney blasted her fourth homer of the season - a three-run shot to left field.
Junior first baseman
McKenzie Sickler tacked on her second home run of the year on a two-run blast over the left-field fence in the third to give the Mustangs a 9-1 advantage through the third inning.
Bingham led off the fourth with her third double of the day to the left-field gap and came around to score on Mooney's RBI-single to left field.
Bingham finished the twin-bill going 7-for-8 with three doubles and four RBIs, Mooney extended her career-best hitting streak to nine games by going 1-for-4 in the opener and 2-for-4 in Game 2.
Junior pitcher
Kristina Gutierrez improved to 3-0 on the season after yielding five runs - three earned - on eight hits. She struck out seven and walked two.
Midwestern State (11-3) opens the Teri Zenner Memorial Tournament Saturday afternoon in Joplin with games against Pittsburg State (Kan.), Missouri Southern and Emporia State (Kan.).
Abilene Christian slipped to 8-11.
