Bats sizzle as Mustangs sweep Abilene Christian

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 21 Midwestern State rocked Abilene Christian for 28 hits in a doubleheader sweep Thursday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

Senior pitcher Katie Petersen delivered her third shutout of the season to lead the Mustangs to a 6-0 lead in Game 1.

The Plano native had six strikeouts and two walks and allowed only a single through the left side with two in the first inning to improve to 5-2 on the season.

The Mustangs struck for three runs in the first inning keyed by Alyson Reynolds' two-run single up the middle to take the early lead.

MSU put the game away with three more runs in the sixth inning highlighted by Courtney Bingham's two-run single through the left side.

Bingham, a redshirt freshman from Arlington, paced the Mustangs by going 4-for-4 with 3 RBIs, while Natalie Rodriguez and Elena Bennett had two hits each.

Bingham stayed hot in Game No. 2 as she drilled a double to the right-field gap to plate Bennett to give MSU the early lead in the first inning.

Abilene Christian struck back to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the second, but it wouldn't last long.

The Mustangs erupted for six runs in the bottom of the frame keyed by Brittney Tanner's two-run single up the middle before sophomore third baseman Mallory Mooney blasted her fourth homer of the season - a three-run shot to left field.

Junior first baseman McKenzie Sickler tacked on her second home run of the year on a two-run blast over the left-field fence in the third to give the Mustangs a 9-1 advantage through the third inning.

Bingham led off the fourth with her third double of the day to the left-field gap and came around to score on Mooney's RBI-single to left field.

Bingham finished the twin-bill going 7-for-8 with three doubles and four RBIs, Mooney extended her career-best hitting streak to nine games by going 1-for-4 in the opener and 2-for-4 in Game 2.

Junior pitcher Kristina Gutierrez improved to 3-0 on the season after yielding five runs - three earned - on eight hits. She struck out seven and walked two.

Midwestern State (11-3) opens the Teri Zenner Memorial Tournament Saturday afternoon in Joplin with games against Pittsburg State (Kan.), Missouri Southern and Emporia State (Kan.).

Abilene Christian slipped to 8-11.
