Deliberate Moore, ECU slows down Mustangs in Game 2, 5-2

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - East Central's Wanda Moore's deliberate pitching style slowed down No. 3 Midwestern State during Game 2 Wednesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The junior's pace and assortment of sidearm and, at times, illegal pitches was enough to limit MSU to two runs on seven hits as East Central (Okla.) came away with a 5-2 Lone Star Conference North Division win.

It was the first home loss of the season for MSU, which had its nine-game winning streak halted as the Mustangs fell to 31-5 on the season and 8-2 against North Division.

Midwestern had won 23 of its last 24.

East Central jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Nicole Sanchez drilled a leadoff double to the left-field gap, then came around to score when Kasey Barber flared a two-out double to the same gap.

Barber came plate ward when Emily Kennemer's perfectly placed pop-up off of the end of her bat tucked neatly between MSU left fielder Courtney Bingham, shortstop Natalie Rodriguez and the left-field line to add the Tigers' second run in the top of the first inning.

The Mustangs rallied in the bottom of the inning despite ECU picking off Natalie Rodriguez on the third base after she worked a leadoff walk and advanced to second on Elena Bennett's bunt single for the first out of the inning.

Bennett advanced to second on one of four called illegal pitches from Moore, who seemed to crow hop off of the rubber throughout the contest. In fact, Bennett scored on Moore's second illegal pitch of the inning after reaching third on a passed ball to cut the ECU advantage to 2-1.

The Tigers took advantage of a pair of MSU errors in the second after Laura Loughmiller reached on an infield single when her pop-up off of the end of her bat evaded MSU starter Brittney Tanner's glove to lead off the inning.

Hillary Hughes and Sanchez reached on consecutive errors on sacrifice bunt attempts which allowed Loughmiller to score to make the game 3-1.

Desiree' Nordie drove in Hughes with a run-scoring single to left field before Sanchez made the score 5-1 on a delayed steal of home.

The Mustangs struck for a run in the third inning on back-to-back doubles from Bingham and Lauren Craig to close within 5-2, but were unable to get a runner past second during the reaming four innings on the slow dealing Moore.

The two-bagger was the 17th of the season for Bingham, who matched Maranda Bishop (2009) for the MSU single-season doubles record.

Tanner took the loss for the Mustangs to fall to 10-2 after yielding five runs - two earned - on seven hits. The junior from Burkburnett logged six strikeouts and walked two.

Freshman Elena Bennett paced MSU's seven-hit attack by going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Midwestern State (31-5, 8-2) plays host to Incarnate Word (Texas) in a non-conference twin bill Thursday at Mustangs Park. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.

East Central improved to 23-11 and 6-4.
