WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's
Katie Petersen retired each of the 15 batters she faced Wednesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
And
Lauren Craig and
Natalie Rodriguez blasted home runs as the No. 3-ranked Mustangs run-ruled East Central (Okla.) by claiming an 8-0 Lone Star Conference North Division win in five innings.
Petersen fanned eight batters on her way to winning her 14th-straight decision, improving to 15-2 on the season.
It was the third perfect game of her career and the second this season to go along with an 11-strikeout gem against Western New Mexico in the MSU Invitational on Feb. 19.
The Mustangs (31-4, 8-1) broke open the game in the first inning as
Elena Bennett reached on a fielder's choice on a bunt sacrifice attempt, and then stole second base.
She would come around to score on sophomore outfielder
Courtney Bingham's 16th double of the season to right field to give MSU an early 1-0 lead.
Senior catcher
Lauren Craig followed with her third homer of the season on a two-run blast to left field to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead through one inning.
Midwestern kept the pressure on ECU starter Randee Crockett in the second as
Nicki Duff led off with a single to right field before taking second on her fourth stolen base of the season.
She came plate ward on Rodriguez's two-out double to the left-field gap to push the advantage to 4-0.
Rodriguez scored when
Elena Bennett reached on a bunt single as the ball got away from the first baseman, then Bingham's pop-up to center field found turf between ECU defenders to give the Mustangs a 6-0 lead.
Rodriguez cranked her fourth homer of the season off of the left-field foul pole in the fourth inning and
Alyson Reynolds doubled in Bingham for the run-rule clincher in the fifth.
Bingham paced the Mustangs' nine-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs, while Rodriguez was 2-for-2 with two runs while driving in two others.
Crockett took the loss for the Tigers to fall to 9-2 while allowing eight runs on eight hits while striking out three in four innings.
East Central dipped to 22-11 on the season and 5-4 in the LSC North.
