No. 7 Mustangs complete LSC Crossover sweep with 4-3 win over ACU

DURANT, Okla. - No. 7 Midwestern State completed its sweep of the Lone Star Conference Crossover with a 4-3 win over Abilene Christian Sunday afternoon at the Durant Multi-Sport Complex.

The Mustangs won each of their six games to claim the tournament championship while extending their current winning streak to eight games.

Midwestern also extended the best start in program history to 30-4 and have won 22 of its last 23 games.

But the Mustangs needed a late inning rally to subdue the Wildcats, who fell to 11-20 on the season.

Freshman outfielder Megan Chartier legged out an infield single, stole second and plated the winning run on Natalie Rodriguez's run-scoring single up the middle in the sixth inning.

Junior Kristina Gutierrez improved to 6-1 after yielding three runs on five hits, but only allowed one hit after the second inning. She struck out four and walked one.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after Rodriguez reached on a leadoff walk and Elena Bennett followed with a bunt single.

MSU scored twice as Courtney Bingham and Lauren Craig reached on fielder's choice before Katie Petersen delivered an RBI single to right field to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Abilene Christian retaliated for three runs in the second on a run-scoring single by Caitlin Nabors and a two-run single by Stephanie Tingle to knot the game at 3-3.

The game would remain tied until the sixth inning.

Bennett and Petersen paced MSU's eight-hit attack with two hits each.

Midwestern State plays host to East Central for an LSC North Division twin bill Wednesday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
