No. 7 Midwestern State rolls past Pioneers, 5-2

DURANT, Okla. - Midwestern State's Katie Petersen made one mistake against Texas Woman's University Saturday afternoon in the Lone Star Conference Crossover at the Durant Multi-Sport Complex.

And TWU's April Mandel blasted it over the left-field fence to give the Pioneers an early lead.

The No. 7-ranked Mustangs were undeterred as they tied the game in the third and took command with a three-run rally in the fifth to claim a 5-2 win over the Pioneers.

Midwestern State, which is off to the best start in school history at 28-4, has now won six-straight games and has lost just once in the last 21 games.

Petersen bounced back after a bumpy first inning to allow two hits over the final six innings to win her 12th-straight decision to improve to 13-2 on the season.

The senior pitcher amassed 14 strikeouts and walked just one.

The Mustangs struck for a run in the top of the first inning when senior catcher Lauren Craig lined a single through the left side to plate Natalie Rodriguez to give MSU the early 1-0 lead.

It was short-lived, however, as Billie Callahan placed a one-out single through the right side of the MSU infield and Mandel followed with a blast over the temporary fence in left field as the Pioneers surged to a 2-1 lead.

The Mustangs bounced back to the game in the third inning when McKenzie Sickler led off the frame by blasting her fifth homer of the season to left field to knot the game at 2-2.

MSU finally broke the game open on Texas Woman's starter Lizzie Kelly in the fifth inning as Sickler drew a lead off walk and Rodriguez reached on an infield single.

Kristina Gutierrez followed with a pinch-hit single to left field before Courtney Bingham drilled a two-run double to right field to give the Mustangs a 5-2 lead.

Rodriguez paced the Mustangs' seven hit attack by going 2-for-4 with two runs, while Bingham went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs included her 15th double of the season.

Texas Woman's dropped to 21-9 on the season.

Midwestern State closes LSC Crossover play Sunday against Eastern New Mexico and Abilene Christian.
