DURANT, Okla. - The strikeouts just keep on coming for No. 7 Midwestern State.
Junior pitcher
Brittney Tanner notched 14 strikeouts on her way to her third shutout of the season as the Mustangs shut down Tarleton State 6-0 Saturday morning in the Lone Star Conference Crossover at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex.
The Burkburnett product limited the TexAnns to just three hits and walked three in the complete game victory to improve to 10-1 on the season.
Midwestern took advantage of a Tarleton miscue in the second inning to score an unearned run off of TexAnn starter Julie Norris when
Megan Chartier scored when
Natalie Rodriguez grounded out to the pitcher to give MSU 1-0 lead in the second inning.
The Mustangs expanded the lead to 4-0 with a three-run third inning keyed by
Kristina Gutierrez's two-out, two-run, pinch-hit single up the middle which was mishandled by Tarleton center fielder Tami Sutton which allowed Tanner to score all the way from first base.
Norris, who allowed four runs - two earned - on four hits through three innings, gave way to Katie Smith to start the fourth inning.
Smith struggled with her command with two walks in the fourth and was also called for four illegal pitches which played a key factor as MSU plated two more runs in the fourth.
Elena Bennett, who reached on a bunt single, came around to score on one of the illegal offerings before
Lauren Craig stroked a run-scoring single to plate another run to give the Mustangs a 6-0 lead through the fourth inning.
That was more than enough for Tanner, who didn't allow a runner past first base after the TexAnns left the bases loaded in the first inning.
The Mustangs extended the best start in school history to 27-4, while Tarleton State slipped to 13-16.
