Petersen, No. 7 MSU shut down No. 22 West Texas A&M, 6-1

DURANT, Okla. - Midwestern State starter Katie Petersen tied a school record with 16 strikeouts as the 7th-ranked Mustangs rolled to a 6-1 win over No. 22 West Texas A&M Friday afternoon in the Lone Star Conference Crossover at the Multi-Sports Complex.

The senior from Plano yielded an unearned run on five hits in the complete game victory to improve to 12-2 on the season.

The 16 strikeouts matched Brittany Willson, who twice performed the feat first at Southwestern Oklahoma on March 1, 2005 then against agianst Angelo State on April 8, 2006.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first Courtney Bingham had an RBI-single to center field and Alyson Reynolds added a two-out, two-run single to center to give the Mustangs the early 3-0 advantage.

The Mustangs added a fourth run in the third inning after Elena Bennett reached on an infield single, advanced to second on a wild pitch then to third on Bingham's ground out to the pitcher.

Bennett would then score her second run of the game on West Texas A&M starter Marci Womack's second wild pitch of the frame.

Midwestern then took adantage of a pair of West Texas errors in the fourth inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

The Buffs broke Petersen's bid for her fifth shutout of the season with an unearned run in the sixth inning.

Bennett joined Natalie Rodriguez and Megan Chartier with two hits each as the Mustangs legged out seven infield singles in the victory.

The Mustangs (26-4) have now won four straight games, 18 of their last 19 and 23 of their last 25.

Midwestern State continues play in the LSC Crossover Saturday when it plays Texas Woman's University and Tarleton State at 10 a.m. and Noon on Field No. 5 at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex.
