DURANT, Okla. - McKenzie Sickler's bloop in the infield fell just out of the reach of Angelo State second baseman Alix Dean allowing
Alyson Reynolds to score the winning run as the Mustangs scratched out an 8-7 win over the No. 2-ranked Rambelles at the Multi-Sport Complex.
The seventh-ranked Mustangs jumped out to an early 4-0 lead when ASU starter April Haywood loaded the bases on a pair of walks and an infield single by
Elena Bennett.
Sophomore third baseman
Mallory Mooney followed with her fifth homer of the season - her first career grand slam - as the Mustangs rocked ASU starter April Haywood, who failed to record an out and was ticketed for six illegal pitches while facing the first five batters of the game.
The Rambelles responded with a grand slam of their own off of the bat of Alix Dean to knot the game at 4-4 in the top of the third inning.
The Mustangs bounced back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning as sophomore outfielder
Nicki Duff drove in
Courtney Bingham with a single up the middle before Mooney came around to score when
Katie Petersen reached on a fielder's choice to give the Mustangs a 6-4 advantage.
MSU starter
Kristina Gutierrez pitched through the fourth inning and left a 6-5 lead in the care of reliever
Brittney Tanner after Brittany Astle blasted a homer to left center field to pull the Rambelles within a run.
Tanner pitched well and was dominant throughout most of her appearance as she logged eight strikeouts in three inning, but each of the three hits she allowed went for extra bases.
Angelo State tied the game at 6-6 on pair of doubles in the sixth inning by Chelsey Waters and Sarah Demoss before the Mustangs surged back out in front when
Natalie Rodriguez scored on Mooney's ground out to second base.
The Rambelles would retie the game on
Kaycee Taylor's third homer of the season in the top of the seventh before MSU again rallied in the bottom of the frame.
Alyson Reynolds and
Nicki Duff drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning off of ASU ace Chelsea Nelson, who came on in relief of Haywood in the first inning.
Freshman
Megan Chartier loaded the bases on a well-placed bunt single before Sickler cued a shot that found dirt in the middle of the Rambelle infield to plate the winning run.
The win was the third-straight for the Mustangs, who improved to 25-4 on the season, while Angelo State dipped to 27-3.
