EDMOND, Okla. - Fielding miscues doomed No. 8 Midwestern State's school-record 14-game winning streak Monday afternoon as the Mustangs came away with a split in a Lone Star Conference North Division twin bill against Central Oklahoma at Broncho Field.
MSU edged the Bronchos 2-1 in the opener before falling 3-2 in the second game at Broncho Field.
The Mustangs (22-4, 5-1) play host to Central Oklahoma in a return doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
Midwestern loaded the bases in the opening two innings of Game 1, but was unable to push across a run until
Natalie Rodriguez drove an RBI-single to left field to plate
Nicki Duff, who had reached on a leadoff double for the first run of the game in the fourth inning.
Rodriguez would come around to score on an errant throw to push the edge to 2-0.
The support proved to be plenty for senior starter
Katie Petersen, who won her ninth-straight decision to improve to 10-2.
The right-hander permitted a run on three hits while fanning six and walking one.
Rodriguez and Duff paced an eight-hit MSU attack by going 2-for-3.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early in Game 2 as Rodriguez reached on a leadoff bunt single, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on an error in the top of the first inning.
MSU pushed the advantage to 2-0 in the fourth after
Mallory Mooney's run-scoring single down the left-field line scored
Courtney Bingham, who doubled to the left-field gap to start the frame.
The Mustangs were unable to advantage of opportunities to break the game open as they left runners in scoring position in three other innings and had a runner throw out at the plate in another.
Meanwhile, the Bronchos took advantage of four MSU errors to plate a pair of runs in the fourth and another in the fifth.
Junior pitcher
Kristina Gutierrez was ticketed with the loss to fall to 5-1. She allowed three runs - one earned - on six hits to go along with two strikeouts and no walks.
Bingham led the Mustangs' six-hit attack by going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
Central Oklahoma is now 14-6 on the season and 5-1 against the LSC North.
