SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Mallory Mooney went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and drove in four runs to lift Midwestern State to a 10-4 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night in the St. Mary's NCAA Division II Classic at the SAISD Spring Sports Complex.
The Mustangs, who improved to 3-1, battle tournament host St. Mary's in the final Sunday at 11 a.m.
Texas A&M-Kingsville's Lindsey Brown smashed a two-run homer in the top of the first inning and the Javelinas added a run on an MSU error in the second to surge out to a 3-0 lead.
But Mooney got the Mustangs going with a double to the left-field gap in the bottom of the second and came plate ward on
Carey Campbell's single up the middle to narrow the margin to 3-1.
Midwestern then sent 12 hitters to the plate in a seven-run third inning highlighted by a two-run Mooney double as
Courtney Bingham,
Elena Bennett and
Nicki Duff also drove in runs in the frame as the Mustangs surged to an 8-3 lead.
Texas A&M-Kingsville answered with a Cassie Anderson long ball in the sixth before Mooney came through with another two-run single in the bottom of the sixth.
Kristina Gutierrez allowed four runs - three earned - on 10 hits with six strikeouts and three walks to claim a win in her MSU debut.
Brown took the loss for the Javelinas after surrendering 10 runs - nine earns - on 13 hits.
