SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Midwestern State mashed out 12 hits on its way to a 7-4 win over Eastern New Mexico Saturday afternoon at the St. Mary's NCAA II Classic at the SAISD Spring Sports Complex.
Nicki Duff,
Natalie Rodriguez,
Courtney Bingham and
Mallory Mooney each tallied two hits as the Mustangs jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead through three innings then hung for the victory to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Mooney's single to left field keyed MSU two-run first inning, while Duff and Rodriguez drove in runs in a three run second.
Junior first baseman
McKenzie Sickler smashed a single through the left side of the infield to drive in Mooney, who had led off the third with a double down the left-field line to give the Mustangs a 6-0 lead through three innings.
MSU would add another run on Bingham's double down the left-field in the sixth, but that was more than enough to help
Brittney Tanner improve to 2-0 on the season.
Tanner allowed two earned runs on three hits in 3 1/3 innings while striking out five and walking five before giving way to
Katie Petersen in the fourth inning.
Petersen picked up her first save of the season yielding two runs - one earned - on one hit, but struggled with her command with six walks and four strikeouts.
