WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State had a great look to upend Tarleton State Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
But
Jazman Patterson's driving layup with 13 seconds to go just wouldn't fall allowing the TexAnns to escape with a 56-54 Lone Star Conference South Divison win.
The loss extended the Mustangs' skid to seven games as MSU fell to 6-14 on the season and to 0-7 in divisional play.
Midwestern fought every bit of the way as it overcame a 12-point deficit in the first half to take a 23-22 lead on
Andrea Buben's jumper from the elbow with 1:38 to go in the opening half.
Tarleton would lead by a single point at the half (26-25) then expanded the lead to 39-25 on a JoAnne Jones fast break jumper at the 14:38 mark in the second half as the TexAnns came out of the locker room on a 14-1 run.
The Mustangs may have been buried, but they certainly weren't done.
Buben hit another jumper to kickstart an 11-0 run with 10:32 to go remaining as MSU would trim the Tarleton advantage to 42-39 on a pair of
Jazman Patterson free throws with 7:40 to play.
The Mustangs continued to chip away until
Breeanna Brown's fast break layup with 3:20 to play gave them the first lead of the second half, but Tarleton was able to hold them off the rest of the way.
Sophomore forward
Savannah Carver led the way with 17 points on a 5-of-6 shooting night which including a 4-of-5 showing from the arc, while
Aqueelah Watkins added 10 points and eight points off of the bench.
